Freeport, Bahamas -
With just four days remaining, the first event in the G.B.C.C. Points
Series Calendar is fast approaching. And with its approach is raised the
question, who will set the bar in each category as cyclist compete not
for trophies or awards, but for points. Every cyclist participating in
G.B.C.C. Points Series events will be awarded points based on their
position at the end of that particular event. Thus, participants are
able to track their progress throughout the series and have the option
of transferring their points from one category to a next.

At the
end of the 10 event series, cyclists will be awarded based on the total
number of points they've accumulated during the series. The cyclist with
the most points in each category will be award the Points Series Jersey
for 2012...

Boxers in Cuba training for Olympic shot

Boxers in Cuba training for Olympic shot

Thu, Mar 29th 2012, 11:13 AM

One shot is all the top two local amateur boxers will get to land their best punches if they plan on qualifying for the upcoming Olympic Games.
Unlike in the past, where boxers were given multiple chances to qualify, the world governing body for the sport, the International Boxing Association (AIBA), has decided to host one qualifying tournament for each region. There are five regions and The Bahamas falls under the AIBA American banner. The qualifying event is scheduled for May 4-13 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Carl Hield and Valentino Knowles are the two boxers selected to compete in the qualifiers.
Both boxers are now training in Cuba, getting ready for the showdown in Brazil. Hield is ranked at number 34 in the world in his class. He fights in the 69 kilo division. Stepping into the ring in the 64 kilo class is Knowles, who is ranked at number 27 in the world. It is the expectation of the national head coach for the team, Andre Seymour, to have both boxers qualify.
Seymour knows that it will be a rough road especially since there are only five spots available in each weight class.
"The Olympic qualifiers will be a test for the boxers because only one is being held this year, but we are ready," said Seymour. "I am confident that we will have both boxers in the Olympics. The same boxers that we competed against at the Pan American Games, Carl and Valentino will go up against them in this qualifier. We won a silver at the Pan Am Games, but we can't look at the silver and think that we are in. We have to throw that out because the qualifier is something different altogether. All the boxers are coming ready and we need to be ready."
Seymour accompanied Hield and Knowles to a training camp, dubbed 'Road to London', last month which carried over into March. About 51 male boxers and 17 females went through rigorous high-intensity training sessions, said Seymour.
He added: "The conditioning and training that all the boxers went through was good. It was all about improving their techniques, and getting some bouts in through sparring with other boxers. They got tips from some of the coaches who were there. I must say that there were boxers from all over the world. Right now, with them being in Cuba, they will train harder and will be ready. I am confident that they will be ready and the results are going to be positive. When they return, we will train and I will work on some of the areas that they will need fine-tuning in, before we leave for Brazil."
In 2008, Taureano Johnson made his Olympic debut in the welterweight division. He defeated Rolande Moses from Grenada and Olexandr Stretskyy from Ukraine before falling in the quarter-finals to Hanati Silamu of China. Johnson was the sole boxer for The Bahamas at the Beijing Olympic Games.
