Albury Sayle Celebrates Literacy Month

Mon, Feb 13th 2023, 10:04 AM

Albury Sayle Primary School is celebrating Literacy Month this February, themed ‘Oh, the Places We’ll Go’, adapted from a title by popular children’s author, Dr. Seuss.

Guest speaker for the launch assembly, Senator Maxine Seymour, urged students to travel the world through books and their imaginations.

“There is a book about everything you can think of; countless books are waiting to be read and written,” said Seymour, as she encouraged children to become authors.

“The alphabet has 26 letters; we reorder them to create words; words come together to make sentences; sentences string together to form paragraphs; paragraphs combine to create amazing stories,” said Seymour.

In an impromptu collaboration with three student volunteers, Seymour and the children told the story of riding on a flying flamingo throughout the archipelago to a water park to play for the day, before returning to school.

At the end of the presentation, Seymour had the school body repeat a Reader’s Oath – pledging to feed their brains daily through reading.

Seymour believes that improved literacy can transform students lives and create opportunities for them beyond their current circumstances. She insists that inspiring younger generations will lead to a better future for the country and is dedicated to doing her part to nurture Bahamian children.

She hosts a virtual storytime twice monthly, on the first and third Wednesday, during which time she reads to participants and quizzes them to build their comprehension skills.

Seymour also reads to children in classroom settings, at various schools, and is open to expanding her reach.

The Literacy Month Assembly was held on Tuesday, February 7 under the pavilion, at the school on Nassau Street. Third graders, Kamani Rolle and Zariyah Russell, moderated. All grade levels participated – reading poems, singing, acting in a skit and dancing. Shirlean Wallace heads the school as principal while teacher, Alexis Mortimer, serves as the Literacy Coordinator.

Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture Launches Anthology of Short Stories

Thu, Dec 22nd 2022, 10:06 AM

The Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture marked a major milestone with the launch of its first ever Anthology of Short stories. The book features the works of over 30 Bahamian writers and authors.  A ceremony marking the event was held on Monday, December 19, 2022 in the Foyer of the Ivy Dumont Building on University Drive.  In attendance was the Minister, the Hon. Mario Bowleg, who congratulated the writers and said that the collection of literary pieces can educate people, effect change and preserve and protect Bahamian culture.

“The submissions are highly readable and provide multiple perspectives and writing styles with a cultural thrust that can educate and effect change,”he said. “To combat the constant international influences on the development of our culture, this anthology will memorialize Bahamian cultural experiences.”

He said that it is also anticipated that the national anthology will develop the literary arm of the cultural sector by providing national and international exposure for Bahamian authors, which can lead to economic opportunities.

Additionally, he said it would promote and venerate Bahamian practices, phrases and sites in print and e-formats for global access to Bahamian cultural material. That material, he said, could be used as supplementary educational material and leisure reading for tourists as well as Bahamians, locally and abroad.
