Commending the government for consulting with Bratton
Fri, Mar 30th 2012, 06:39 AM
Dear Editor,
I commend the government for seeking the advice of William Bratton as part of the fight against crime. This is a positive development that is clearly one of many tools being employed by our police in their ongoing battle against crime. Inviting one of the top law enforcement officers in the world to offer advice is what anyone serious about rooting out crime would want to do. I wonder how some can think this is a negative thing?
The Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) is trying to make it a negative, as they tend to do with everything. They are wrong for that as they usually are. For the PLP to suggest that the visit by Bratton was negative is dishonest, disruptive and divisive. This is not what we need as a nation right now.
The government is already clearly putting forth a strong fight against crime, on every level. This is an undeniable fact. I find it very disheartening to see the PLP resorting to its same old tactics, creating all kinds of strife through their "mouthpieces" on the airwaves.
I think it is safe to say that every Bahamian wants to win the war against crime. It is therefore the responsibility of the Bahamian government to use any legal means necessary toward this end, leaving no stone unturned. Is the PLP saying that they are not in favor of this? Do they not want to fight crime and make our society safe? That is what it is sounding like on some talk shows this week when you listen to the PLP.
Some radio commentators play partisan politics on the air and "stir the pot" saying that consulting with experts from abroad is somehow an insult to Bahamians. The insult and disgrace is having a spin doctor on the radio spoon-feed us a repackaged nonsense to further their narrow interests. In the end, it is not lofty promises, but tangible results that matter at the end of the day.

FORMER Cabinet Minister Kenneth Russell branded the FNM's abrupt final suspension of the House of Assembly, which prevented many retiring MPs from making their final address, a "shocking" and "nasty" move.
The High Rock MP, who was asked to resign from the Cabinet last year, said the decision to suspend parliament until the day before it must be dissolved ahead of the election, showed disrespect to leaving MPs and a reluctance to let some of them speak their mind.
On Wednesday, after announcing that he didn't "want any arguing," Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham suspended the House until May 22 and said he plans to dissolve ...
