Tue, Nov 30th 2010, 10:00 PM
A JUDICIAL review will be sought over the decision to allow for the redevelopment of Bell Island, according to a local attorney.
In a press release, attorney Keod Smith stated that steps will be taken to start a judicial review of the decision by Environment Minister Earl Deveaux to grant permission to dredge and excavate more than 12 acres of land and sea at the 349-acre island in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park.
Plans to dredge three areas to accommodate vessels up to 150 ft long, excavate a marina and redevelop a barge landing, were submitted by Islands of Discovery Ltd after Prince Karim Aga Khan bought the island last year.
The permits will allow developers to excavate 4.32 acres of upland ...

Letter: A bronze statue in memory of Sir Lynden Pindling Give us a break
Tue, Nov 30th 2010, 10:00 PM
EDITOR, The Tribune. In the 23rd October edition of The Nassau Guardian appeared a letter from a senior resident of San Salvador, who had no problem signing his name to an article, calling for the erection of a statue in memory of the late Sir Milo Butler, and gave his reasons for making such a call. I disagreed with his call, and wrote to the press giving my reasons for so doing. In today's publication (16th Nov. 2010) in the Letters to the Editor column of The Nassau Guardian is another letter, whose author chose not to use his/her moniker, but rather hide under the blanket of a "Concerned Citizen" while making an impassioned plea for the erection of a 25 or 30 foot bronze statue t ...

SEVENTEEN-year-old Christopher Sands added his fourth Bahamian national champion title in sailing this year by winning the 2010 Sunfish National Championship regatta, narrowly beating his rivals for the coveted first place.
"Earlier this year, Sands won the Sunfish Junior Nationals and also the Laser Junior Nationals. And last weekend he became the Bahamas Laser National Champion at the senior level and now he also captures the Sunfish senior title," said a press release.
In contrast to last weekend's blustery weather conditions, this weekend not only did he switch to a different class boat, he had to deal with much lighter winds and proved that he can handle any conditions.

By NEIL HARTNELL
Tribune Business Editor
Efforts to sell the last government-owned hotel have been radically restructured to focus solely on the initial development of the "core hotel and marina", Tribune Business can reveal, a senior government minister confirming that avoiding massive upfront real estate sales to developers was "a philosophy that's going to permeate everything we do".
Implying that the initial Scheck Industries proposal for the Andros-based Lighthouse Yacht Club & Marina had been dropped, Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, minister of tourism and aviation, told Tribune Business that the Illinois-based developer was still interested in the site and was expe ...
