Nassau, The Bahamas - Public Works and Transport Minister the Hon. Neko C. Grant officially commissioned Bahamasair's refurbished Boeing 737-500 as part of the airline's fleet of jet aircraft during a special ceremony Wednesday, March 28. In his remarks Minister Grant said while the airline continues to offer service in a competitive environment, the Bahamas Government along with the airline's board of directors are focusing on the "capacity" and "composition" of the aircraft fleet with a view to upgrading equipment and achieving greater fuel efficiency. Mr. Grant said a comprehensive review of Bahamasair's fleet was undertaken in 2009 in collaboration with aviation consultants Morton Beyer and Agnew. North Andros seat vacant since March 1
Fri, Mar 30th 2012, 12:08 PM
Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham said last night that the North Andros and the Berry Islands seat has been vacant since March 1 due to the prolonged absence of MP Vincent Peet. Peet, the former Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) MP for North Andros and the Berry Islands, ran into problems relating to $180,000 in client funds. The long-time attorney removed himself from frontline politics last December shortly after those reports surfaced in The Nassau Guardian. He has remained away from the House of Assembly since the story broke and has also remained relatively quiet on the political scene. Addressing a crowd of Free National Movement (FNM) supporters in Marathon last night, Ingraham said, "Mr. Vincent Peet is no longer a Member of the House of Assembly." "In accordance with the House Rules written and put in place by the PLP, if a Member of Parliament is absent from the House without leave for a period of 90 days he automatically vacates his seat." Ingraham continued, "The records of the House of Assembly reflect that Mr. Vincent Peet last attended a sitting of the House on November 30, 2011. In accordance with the rules, his North Andros and the Berry Islands seat became vacant on March 1, 2012." The prime minister said the government will "deal with the question of pay" for Peet. The PLP is running retired director of the National AIDS Programme Dr. Perry Gomez in North Andros and the Berry Islands. Several weeks ago, Peet attended a PLP rally in North Andros and passed a baton on to Dr. Gomez, in a symbolic gesture. Peet also patted himself on the back for his representation in the constituency for the last decade. Back in December, PLP Leader Perry Christie described Peet as a loyal and dependable ally in Parliament and in the councils of the party for many years. "He has given outstanding service to our nation, especially as a cabinet minister and as the representative for the constituency of North Andros," Christie said. "However, I firmly believe that Mr. Peet has made the correct decision in agreeing not to stand in the next election. I commend him for the completely unselfish and sensible position he has taken in this matter." Last night, Peet said he had no comment on the prime minister's public revelation. The House of Assembly had its last sitting for the term on Wednesday.

DNA hits back at Christie over crime
Fri, Mar 30th 2012, 10:00 AM
THE Democratic National Alliance hit out at opposition leader Perry Christie for saying the fledgling party is "clueless" when it comes to fighting violent crime. Calling Mr Christie's remarks "utter nonsense", the DNA noted that serious crime, specifically murder, has been on an upward spiral since the PLP took office in 2002. At the beginning of Mr Christie's term, there were 52 murders committed in the Bahamas, but by the end of 2007 when he left office, there were 79, DNA Leader Branville McCartney said. He said the facts show Mr Christie was a "complete failure" when it came to fighting crime. Mr McCartney said: "Their 'Tough on Crime' and 'Oper ...
