Nassau, Bahamas - Beginning today a road closure is being implemented for the southbound lane on Baillou Hill Road South, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has announced. Shenique Albury, environmental specialist attached to the New Providence Road Improvement and Infrastructure Project provided an update on traffic management of the project during a news briefing Wednesday, July 13. "The area directly behind Family Guardian on Baillou Hill Road South will be closed to vehicular traffic and two-way traffic will be allowed in the northbound lane," said Ms. Albury. "Southbound traffic will cross over the median to the northbound lane and there will be one lane of traffic in each direction."

THE COMPLETION date for the New Providence Road Improvement project has been delayed by three months due to the discovery of unmapped and undocumented utilities along with other natural factors. The project, that was originally scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011, will not be finished until the first quarter of 2012. Shenique Albury, public relations officer in the Ministry of Works, told reporters the biggest challenge for the contractors is coming across underground infrastructure from utility companies that they did not know existed. Left lane of Baillou Hill Road South closed

The left lane of Baillou Hill Road South will be closed starting June 20.

To accommodate the closure, two lanes of traffic will be implemented in the north lane while the area directly behind the Family Guardian building will be closed to vehicular traffic.

According to Charlene Collie, engineer and public relations representative for the New Providence Road Improvement and Infrastructure Project, this area will be closed to execute "much needed" underground works including installation of a water main and service ducts for future use and drainage.

The work including installation of the water main - heading further south - is expected to be completed within four to six weeks.
