The Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) on Wednesday held the Twenty-Ninth Special Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) Health in The Bahamas at  Atlantis Resort.  This meeting follows the Thirty-First Meeting of Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) conducted on April 25, 2023, where relevant health topics were discussed.

The COHSOD Health meeting brought together Caribbean leaders in health to confer about issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, steps towards the elimination of communicable and tropical diseases, crime and violence, mental health and other topics that impact Caribbean public health.

Belize’s Minister of Health and Wellness, the Hon. Kevin Bernard, who was supported by CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General, Ms. Alison Drayton and Dr. Joy St. John, Executive Director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), chaired the meeting.

Minister of Health & Wellness for The Bahamas, the Hon. Dr. Michael R. Darville stated that it was “good to have” his colleagues from the Caribbean at the meeting, to address various health issues impacting the region in a post COVID-19 pandemic.  Such matters include addressing mental health, and a recent Bill The Bahamas has introduced for greater protection of those affected.
