At the Annual Cancer Society of Grand Bahama’s ‘Hope Gala Ball’ on Saturday, Minister for Grand Bahama the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville gave observations of the cancer fight from his very immediate experience as a physician, and said he aims to ensure the medical infrastructure of Grand Bahama is advanced to state of the art.

This year’s ball was held under the theme “Life is Beautiful, Live Life: Celebrate.” It is the premier fund raising event of The Grand Bahama Branch of The Cancer Society of the Bahamas.

Dr. Darville noted: “Firstly, I would like to say that as a physician who has practiced in this community for a few decades, I am aware of and have seen firsthand, the increase in the number of cases in cancer in Grand Bahama and the dangers and effects of this deadly disease. Therefore, I would like to extend my congratulations to this group and assure you of my support as you endeavor to bring awareness of the various forms of cancer to all residents and offer hope to those individuals who are struggling with this disease.

“I would also like to express my appreciation to the executives and members of The Grand Bahama Cancer Society for your labour of love in Grand Bahama. I am to understand that this non-profit organization provides educational resources, free testing, referrals and support services to Grand Bahamians who need to be housed at The Cancer Care Centre in New Providence. These services assist countless individuals and families affected by Cancer.”

He continued, “Ladies and gentlemen, as we are all aware, cancer is very prevalent in Grand Bahama. In fact, I am able to safely say that at least one person in every family, neighbourhood or workplace on this island, will be affected by this disease. For this reason, your efforts to assist the public by providing these services are to be commended. I encourage you to keep up the excellent work.”

Dr. Darville said as Minister for Grand Bahama, it is his mandate to ensure that medical infrastructure for Grand Bahama is advanced. Therefore, within this term of office, the people of Grand Bahama will see the actualization of a state of the art hospital and improvement of all medical infrastructures on Grand Bahama, including clinics.

“As the theme of this ball, Love Life: Celebrate indicates, there is hope for persons who are ill in our communities. This government, along with private partners, will enhance health care on Grand Bahama and provide quality, cost effective services to all residents, thus bringing the assistance and hope that they need.” (BIS Photo/Vandyke Hepburn)
