Hundreds of professionals in the trust and estate sectors are expected to meet in Nassau in a matter of months to explore the "new wave of opportunity" between on-shore and the international financial centers (IFCs).
For the first time in a decade, the local branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) will host the organization's Caribbean Conference in May. Step executives say they are "really excited" to host the two-day event. It will address a myriad of issues facing the industry including economic trends and the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).
The conference will also explore the possibilities that come with the notion that Caribbean IFCs will continue to grow and leverage their respective strengths in a world where change is the norm.
Organizers are expecting delegates to hail from places as far away as Australia, South Africa, Europe, South America and North America.
"The topics will be stimulating and related to the industry as a whole. We will talk about economic trends that are happening and FATCA is hot on the burner for most countries. So the topics will be varied," according to Anita Bain, STEP's former chairperson.
"It's been 10 years since we hosted the conference here because the last time was in 2004. So we're really excited to host this one," STEP's current chairperson Marie Cargill chimed in.
The Bahamas represents the largest branch in the Caribbean, with other 400 members.
"This year, there will be a new element to the conference where there will be an online presence with live streaming and use of social media," Bain explained.
"This is the third time that the conference is being held in The Bahamas. We're excited about the opportunity to host this event here again in The Bahamas. Local firms have been really supportive of this conference so far. "
The Step Caribbean Conference will take place from May 12-14 at the Atlantis Resort.
