A 53-year-old man was found dead yesterday near the door step of his Market Street home by anxious relatives who had not seen him in days, police said.
Superintendent Paul Rolle, officer-in-charge of the Central Detective Unit (CDU), said the man may have been dead for up to three days.
The victim, who was identified by neighbors as Ricardo Johnson, was stabbed multiple times, police said.
Rolle, who spoke to reporters on the scene, said Johnson's relatives forced their way into his home just before 8 a.m.
Johnson's sister was among those who reportedly found him.
When The Nassau Guardian arrived on the scene, Johnson's body was lying in a pool of blood on the inside of the apartment.
Rolle said police had limited information on the murder and appealed to anyone who may be able to help police in their investigations to contact the Central Detective Unit (CDU) at 502-9991.
Johnson's neighbor, Bursell Bradshaw, 78, said he knew him for about 40 years.
He said Johnson was his mechanic.
"He was a friendly guy," Bradshaw said. "He worked on my cars and my truck over the years. I found him to be a nice person."
As Johnson's body was removed from his home, his friends and family stood on the side of the street in apparent disbelief.
Bradshaw said Johnson was popular in the neighborhood.
"I was shocked when I heard that name, that they found Ricky in the back there murdered," Bradshaw said.
"He was well liked."
Barry Williams, 45, said he went to church with Johnson.
"He just shook my hand in church on Sunday," Williams said.
He said Johnson often encouraged him to be a better person.
"I'm sad because it could've been me," Williams said. "There is too much crime in The Bahamas.
"I knew him since I was 16. He was a nice person. I don't know why [someone] did this."
Johnson's murder is the eighth for the year.
