Glitch causes ankle bracelet system shutdown

A glitch caused the electronic monitoring system to shut down on Tuesday, according to a Nassau Guardian source, who is closely involved in national security issues.
The source was unable to say the exact nature of the glitch, but noted that the Bahamas Telecommunications Company's (BTC) network plays a critical role in the monitoring system.
However, no incidents were reported, said the source, who pointed out that the down time was "very short".
Nearly 400 accused individuals are being monitoring through the ankle bracelet system, The Guardian understands.
The last incident reported with the system involved 30 individuals who officials said timed it out by using foil paper to deactivate the devices in January.
The use of the foil paper allowed the monitored suspects to disappear off the monitoring center's radar from the electronic monitoring system.
The Ingraham administration awarded a contract to ICS Security Concepts and SecureAlert for the electronic monitoring of accused offenders in November 2010.
The previous administration implemented electronic monitoring "to provide a practical and workable solution to improve national responses to crime and criminality, and particularly violent crimes such as murder and armed robbery".
