NASSAU, BAHAMAS - Carnival Cruise Line has revealed that its forthcoming exclusive destination on Grand Bahama Celebration Key will encompass a retail portal named Lokono Cove, with help from a Grand Bahama resident.

Lokono Cove emerged as the winning entry from a community-wide competition bolstered by the support of the Ministry for Grand Bahama and the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture. Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy announced the name during the Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach.

At Lokono Cove, one of the five entrances to Celebration Key, an array of shops and stalls will converge alongside an authentic Bahamian artisan market, showcasing local craftsmanship. Visitors will peruse locally crafted wares, marveling at the intricacy of Bahamian artistry. From mementos to exquisite jewelry, Lokono Cove will offer an immersive experience of Bahamian culture beyond its merchandise.

A selection panel comprising local Grand Bahama officials and representatives from the cultural and creative sectors played a pivotal role in choosing the name Lokono Cove, submitted by Deidre Rahming, as part of a competition open to all residents of Grand Bahama. Lokono, derived from the Lucayans, translates to "the people", paying homage to the indigenous inhabitants who were among the first settlers of Grand Bahama. Historically characterized as a gentle and creative community of artisans adept in basket weaving, pottery, and painting, the Lucayans left an indelible mark on Bahamian culture.

"Lokono Cove will serve as a veritable treasure trove - a haven for our guests to immerse themselves in the essence of The Bahamas and acquire locally-inspired keepsakes, emblematic of paradise, to share with loved ones or cherish for years to come," remarked Duffy. "Respecting the beauty and heritage of the Bahamas is fundamental to our vision for Celebration Key, and Lokono Cove will epitomize this ethos. It's a distinct honor that residents of Grand Bahama have already made a significant contribution, bestowing upon this portal its name."

Moreover, Lokono Cove will function as the gateway to explore Grand Bahama beyond Celebration Key. Whether guests opt for independent exploration or Carnival Adventures shore excursions, Lokono Cove will serve as the embarkation point for those seeking to discover other facets of this enchanting island.

For her winning submission, Rahming will be awarded B$5,000 in cash, an invitation to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Lokono Cove, which includes transportation, dining, and beverages, and a day pass to Celebration Key, complete with drink vouchers, meals, and access to a cabana.

Lokono Cove joins Paradise Plaza, designated as a welcome area, and Calypso Lagoon, tailored for adults, as three of the five entry points. Carnival Cruise Line plans to unveil details soon regarding the remaining two portals, one catering to families and another offering an adults-only private retreat. Celebration Key is slated to greet its inaugural guests in July 2025, with over 500 itineraries currently available for booking, featuring visits to this new destination aboard 18 ships departing from 10 U.S. homeports.
