Minister of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting, the Hon. Myles LaRoda and Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey were given a tour of the Evangeline Jervis Community Service Distribution Center in Grand Bahama on Thursday, April 4, 2024 by executives of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The 8,000 square-foot facility, which is the first dedicated hurricane shelter in the country, is being constructed by the Seventh-day Adventist Church at its Freeport campus on Beachway Drive.

The Government has partnered with the Seventh-day Adventist Church on the Hurricane Shelter project.

The hurricane shelter can accommodate up to 300 people, is 90 per cent complete and equipped with an industrial kitchen, restroom, shower and locker facilities, sleeping quarters, laundry room and generator.

Impressed with the facility, Minister Laroda commended the Seventh-day Adventist Church for taking such a bold step in seeking to assist in safeguarding the residents of Grand Bahama in the event of a hurricane.

“We are all our brother’s keeper; the government can’t do everything and there are a lot of groups and churches that are doing a tremendous job, but on this day we have to single out the Adventists for what they have done here,” Minister Laroda said.

He said the government is playing its part and depends on other church and civic organizations to following the Seventh-Day Adventists' lead.

“This facility here is a perfect example of a good partner.  The Seventh-day Adventists have been in this community for a very long time and have made tremendous contributions,” Minister Laroda pointed out.

Minister Laroda said while he hopes the hurricane shelter is not needed any time soon, the Adventist Church has played their role in providing shelter for a needy community.

Pastor of Seventh-day Adventists Freeport and president of the North Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Eric D. Clarke thanked the government for its support.

“We recognize that a number of other partners have come onboard with us, we are grateful to all stakeholders, but today, singularly, I think the government has been our largest contributor to this hurricane shelter and we are so grateful,” he said.

The shelter is expected to open in June, just in time for the Hurricane Season which runs from June 1 – November 30.

Ministers Laroda and Moxey were accompanied by Permanent Secretary Joel Lewis; Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry for Grand Bahama Kingsley Smith; Permanent Secretary Phedra Rahming-Turnquest and Acting Director in the Department of Social Services Charlamae Fernander.
