Three toddlers were among those injured yesterday when the boat they were on collided into a sand bank a half mile north of the Freeport dock, police said.

While police initially said there were 11 adults injured, the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) later said there were 16 patients from the incident, including the three children.

PHA said five of the injured were admitted to Rand Memorial Hospital.

Police reported that shortly before 1p.m. on Sunday, the 36 foot vessel with 21 people onboard left Fortune Bay Drive en route to Grand Cay, Abaco.

Several passengers were reportedly ejected from the vessel and subsequently retrieved from the water. The passengers, all Bahamians, were assisted by another vessel and returned to Grand Bahama, police said.

Police had reported the injured as seven women, four men, two girls and a boy.

The PHA advised that consultant specialists will review the patients and update relatives going forward.

Police said they were questioning the boat captain, a 53-year-old Grand Cay man, in connection with the matter.
