The sport of gymnastics has had its share of turmoil here in The Bahamas, but that hasn't stop enthusiasts in the sport from moving forward. In fact, the Gymnastics Federation of the Bahamas (GFB) and Nassau 'Nastics have seen a tremendous increase over the past few years, and the road to an Olympic qualification is being paved.
The two entities have teamed up to put on a week-long course, starting today at the Atlantis Resort, on Paradise Island. The practical instructions will take place at the gym clubs, located at the Source River Center, Bacardi Road, and in the Oakes Field Shopping Centre. The course is designed to encourage and assist with the advancement in the sport in the country. Master instructor Lilia Ortiz from Mexico will chair the seminar.
Ortiz is an expert gymnastics trainer, with a Bachelor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She also holds a Master Instructor of Training and certification for the World Association of Gymnastics (WAG). A WAG International Judge GAF Level III, Ortiz is certified in beginner to advanced gymnastics teaching skills.
After completion, participants will be awarded with certificates from the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the Bahamas Olympic Committee (BOC). No prior experience is necessary to enroll in the course, which is $25 per person.
"We are thrilled to have this opportunity to host this FIG training course that will not only expose, but also tangibly advance the sport of gymnastics here in The Bahamas," said GFB President Barbara Thompson. "The coaches' Olympic Solidarity Technical Course for Women's Artistic Gymnastics is a means for coaches from GFB member clubs and all those who are interested in acquiring skills to teach gymnastics. The objective is to increase the number of qualified coaches to benefit Bahamian gymnasts of all levels, and to attract more Bahamian athletes to the sport.
"The pool of talented Bahamian gymnasts will continue to thrive and grow thanks to the generous support of the BOC and FIG. The raw abilities of the gymnasts are bolstered by the support they receive from qualified training. The coaches, parents and other interested supporters will receive invaluable training that will help us all to develop the sport of gymnastics here in The Bahamas," Thompson added.
The GFB hopes to branch out by expanding to the Family Islands. The federation is now accepting applications for membership.
