Some large customers on Abaco still not connected, says BPL

Four years after Hurricane Dorian struck Abaco and Grand Bahama, Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) has yet to restore some of its largest customers on Abaco, the company's Chief Administration Officer Ian Pratt said yesterday, adding though, that the power company has connected some 100 customers per month over the past six months.

"A number of our large commercial customers still haven't returned yet," said Pratt.

"Memorial Plaza, there's some construction there but they're not back fully yet. Curly Tails, Regattas, Treasure Cay marina, etc, they are not fully back yet. That's some of our larger customers."

Pratt, who made the remarks during the Abaco Business Outlook, said customers that have be added back to the grid over the past year include Dove Plaza, The Conch Inn, Bluff House, Abaco Beach and Wally's.

Abaco was BPL's second largest revenue earner next to New Providence, before Hurricane Dorian struck in 2019.

Pratt said BPL is happy to have those customers back, as the company continues its restoration efforts and improves the transmission system on the island.

"In the whole process around restoration after the hurricane, one thing we wanted to ensure we did was improve the system," he said.

"In the family island space, because of our limited customer base and business case you have to make for investors and whatnot, in the family island space you normally have one power station in the middle, one line going to the south and one line going to the north.

"What that means is if you have an island the size of Abaco, if somebody runs down the pole in Treasure Cay, that means all of Little Abaco and everybody to the north is off until that is repaired.

"One of the things we wanted to do in the restoration was build a resilient system, such that we reroute power around issues like that."

Pratt said BPL has improved transmission on the island as it rebuilds and puts more robust hurricane resistant poles.
