The discovery of trace amounts of oil at coastal shorelines in parts of Grand Bahama has triggered an island-wide investigation, according to a statement yesterday from Lucaya Service Company (LUSCO), which is a part of the task force investigating the cause.

In the statement, LUSCO said the task force "will continue the investigation into the recent appearance of oil residue that is impacting coastal shorelines in the Lucaya, Freeport and government areas".

"We are all working together to determine the initiating cause of this incident and it remains a high priority of the task force."

The task force also consists of the Department of Environmental Planning and Protection (DEPP), the Port Department, and the Grand Bahama Port Authority's Environmental Department.

"The responding agencies, with assistance from private citizens and non-governmental agencies, have enacted remediation protocols in conjunction with the relevant environmental agencies to ensure the swift and proper remediation of oil deposits. The task force is systematically checking beaches islandwide as they continue to monitor impacted shorelines."

LUSCO has asked the public to exercise caution when visiting the beaches, especially with pets.

"Please allow the task force to conduct their investigations and carry out the necessary remediation works safely and quickly. Please stay tuned for further updates."

On Tuesday, LUSCO revealed that trace amounts of oil particles were discovered near Fortune, Churchill and Spanish Main beaches.
