Some 425 homes and businesses in Little Exuma and 130 homes and businesses in Baraterre will receive running water for the first time as a result of two contracts totaling over $9 million signed today (July 12, 2023) between the Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC), Bakerwick Construction Company Limited and Rowdy Boys Construction.

The Hon. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation and Member of Parliament for Exuma and Ragged Island, a native of Forbes Hill, Little Exuma, expressed thanks and pride that this day has finally come.

Said the DPM, “The day has finally come where we can bring running water to Little Exuma and the people of Baraterre for the first time. When you live with the lack of running water this means so much more than simply the signing and the execution of a contract. This is a significant improvement in the way of life for the people in these communities and it demonstrates to them that they have not been forgotten. This is extremely significant for the residents but also for the growth of all these areas. Exuma is a booming economy. Little Exuma has grown more slowly than the rest of the island. I believe the signing and the execution of these contracts will be the catalyst for even faster economic growth that will benefit the people of Little Exuma.”

The ceremony took place in the boardroom of the WSC. Among those present were the Hon. Alfred Sears, Minister of Works and Utilities; Bacchus Rolle, Parliamentary Secretary; the Hon. Sylvanus Petty, WSC Chairman; Luther Smith, Permanent Secretary; Marlin Bostwick and representatives of Bakerwick Construction; Bernard Knowles and representatives from Rowdy Boys Construction; members of the WSC board and management and staff of the WSC.

The contract for Little Exuma, a joint venture with Bakerwick Construction and Tycoon Management, will supply, install, test and commission 45,000 feet or 8.5 miles of new water mains and new service connections for 425 homes and businesses for Little Exuma.  Construction on this project has commenced and is expected to be completed in 230 calendar days.

“The existing water supply system presently stops at Rolletown with a separate small water distribution system in Williams Town. This project will entail extending the system from Rolletown eastward to serve the communities of Hartswell, the Ferry, Forbes Hill into Williams Town,” said Minister Sears.

The contract for Alexander and Baraterre with Rowdy Boys Construction includes the supply, installation, testing and commission of 16,000 feet or over 3 miles of water mains replacements including the replacement of 200 water service connections to homes in Georgetown. Also included is the provision of 32,650 feet or 6.2 miles of new water mains for the settlements of Alexander and Baraterre.

According to Minister Sears, the contractor is expected to begin work shortly and the project is expected to be completed in 189 calendar days after the work begins.

He extended appreciation to customers in Exuma for their patience and understanding as the corporation works to improve potable water supply access and service levels. He acknowledged the WSC teams in the Exumas and New Providence who will be responsible for the execution and management of the projects. He also thanked the Ministries of Finance and Works and Utilities for the productive and collaborative partnership in provision of “reliable” water and sanitation utility services.
