BEC EYEING 50M CLIFTON EXPANSION

THE BAHAMAS ELECTRICITY CORPORATION (BEC) is eyeing a $50 million investment to expand the Clifton Pier power plant's generation capacity by 30 Megawatts (MW) over the next two years, its chairman yesterday telling Tribune Business it should still generate a $7 million net profit for its 2011 financial year.

Michael Moss said BEC was expected to realise this net income level despite taking a "close to $3 million hit" from hiring 24 rental generators to supplement its existing power supply while it completes critical maintenance work and overhauls on its permanent generating capacity.
