A 42-year-old American tourist broke down in tears yesterday after she was charged with vehicular manslaughter in the death of her passenger.

Prosecutors say Carol Garcia, 42, of Miami, Florida, caused the death of Wilber Jorge on February 18 through dangerous driving.

According to police, Garcia was driving an ATV in Heritage Park at Arawak Cay around 3:30 p.m. when it overturned and ejected Jorge. He died a short time later in hospital. They were both visiting the country on a cruise.

Garcia, who had visibly healing facial injuries, was not required to enter a plea to the vehicular manslaughter charge when she made her initial appearance before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.

The prosecution did not object to bail and Garcia's lawyer, Ian Cargill, asked that she be released on cash bail.

Ferguson-Pratt granted Garcia $18,000 cash bail and adjourned the matter to May 24 for the presentation of a voluntary bill of indictment.
