Affirming that the prime minister will not allow any foreigners to take advantage of Bahamian workers, Office of the Prime Minister Press Secretary Clint Watson said yesterday government has intervened to ensure a development company, which was building luxury homes on Abaco, pays the Bahamian workers it has left in the lurch.

Watson revealed last month that the prime minister was looking into claims that a group of Bahamians working for the development company had not been paid since September 2022.

He said that company pulled out of the project before paying 40 Bahamian workers.

"The company did not make good on its payroll for several months to the employees and then pulled out," Watson said.

"The government was able to dialogue with the company; they have begun discussions and talks.

"Some 40 Bahamians have outstanding payrolls. The Department of Labour has taken on this dispute. The prime minister will not allow foreigners or anyone to take advantage of Bahamian workers who abuse the Department of Immigration and [Department of] Labour.

"In light of that, talks have begun to ensure that we get the money that's due to the Bahamian people. We will not endorse or allow this to continue in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, and when it's made known we immediately intervene.

"We expect [to provide an update in the coming weeks] and hopefully have those persons who have been left wanting resolved in this matter and we can move on and ensure this never repeats itself."
