The Nassau Guardian's Kerstin Pinder, a graphic artist and web marketing coordinator in the Advertising Department, was among the top three finalists for the logo and theme competition for the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Bahamas independence.

The logo submitted by Pinder featured all of the major islands and many icons of The Bahamas — the flamingo, the lighthouse, the crab, the conch shell, the Blue Marlin, among them — formed into the shape of the 50th with options for three colors — black, aquamarine and gold.

"I wanted to represent all of the major islands and elements of what makes us Bahamian and to show cohesion," said Pinder, explaining her thought process in coming up with the logo submission.

"Every year, there is a big focus in New Providence and Grand Bahama. I think for the 50th, everyone should be celebrated, every island, every cay."

Pinder said she wanted anyone anywhere to be able to look at her logo and see the story of The Bahamas in a simple, clean and artistic fashion.

Asked how she felt about being selected among the top three winners, she responded, "For me, it has been validation that I chose the right career path and I'm just excited."

While her logo was not selected as the overall winner, it is expected to be the official pattern for the 50th independence celebrations and is expected to show up frequently on various paraphernalia.

"It is motivation to evolve the logo," Pinder said. "From looking at the two other winners, I want to go back and elevate the logo."

She added her family is very proud of her accomplishment.

"I just wish my mom and dad were here to celebrate with me," said Pinder, who lost her parents over the last two years.

The other two finalists were Durelle Williams and Devante Butler.

The final logo incorporates a flock of flamingos with Junkanoo designs (the brainchild of Williams) soaring over a golden 50th design.

Williams said his inspiration was "Junkanoo, as well as Bahamian culture".

"It is definitely an honor," he said. "It makes me proud to actually be seen and be rewarded with an opportunity to do such an impactful piece of art work."

The chosen theme for the celebrations is "The Bahamas 50: One Nation. Our Legacy. Our Future."

The Nassau Guardian congratulates its own, Kerstin Pinder, on her achievement and looks forward to her design being incorporated frequently during the 50th celebrations.
