Doongalik Studios' rebrand

It's been a decade since the death of Jackson Burnside III, Doongalik Studios' founder, and in commemoration of the occasion, the rebranded gallery space has opened showcasing the artwork and designs of Burnside for viewing, along with a selection of Bahamian books and DVDs, exclusive ceramic art, and woodwork for sale.

Pam Burnside, Doongalik owner, said May 11 marked the 10th anniversary of Burnside’s death and they decided to rebrand the gallery to become a repository of her late husband’s legacy by highlighting his artwork, as well as opening the Jackson Logan Burnside III Design Library and Research Centre, established with in memoriam donations received in 2011.
The library is comprised of Burnside’s extensive collection of books on architecture, art, Junkanoo, design, and business.
The present catalogue numbers almost 1,000 items.
Burnside’s widow says the project is still a work in progress, as her late husband’s insight and wisdom from his wide interests in creativity and Bahamian culture can also be found in his many speeches and writings as well as years of “Junkanoo Talks” radio shows that can be shared with the general public, locally and internationally.
“Last year we highlighted Jackson’s vision statement: By the year 2020 more visitors will travel to The Bahamas because of its art, culture and heritage, rather than merely for its sun, sand and sea; 2020 was also the year when COVID-19 appeared causing the whole world to pause, stop, and reassess,” said Burnside.
Donors to the library were offered a tour of the rebranded space during the anniversary week and the library, which Burnside says will be suitable for high school and tertiary students, and will be operational by appointment only later in the year.
The Art Gallery and store will be available for visits during the usual business hours of Monday to Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Scheduled paid group tours will also be offered.
