Syesha Cox is one of 112 sixth-grade graduates nominated and recently recognized by the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Foundation (BPSSYF). The nominees shared $141,000 in scholarships and over $40,000 in prizes.

This year’s cohort joins the 2,700 primary school students who have been awarded with over $1.9 million in scholarships and prizes since 1997.

As a finalist, Syesha received a $2,000 scholarship sponsored by CIBC FirstCaribbean. The bank will also present her with a backpack equipped with essential school supplies for the upcoming school year.

Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year nominees are judged on contribution to school life, academic achievement, extracurricular achievement, community involvement, and overall presentation of the portfolio submitted. Among other accomplishments, Syesha served as First Step Academy’s Head Girl and published a cookbook late last year.

Mrs. Marie Rodland-Allen, CIBC FirstCaribbean’s Managing Director, applauded Syesha on a job well done.

“As a nominee and finalist, you are recognized as one of the “best and brightest” students in The Bahamas.

“We at CIBC FirstCaribbean know that sixth-grade ended in an unexpected way for you and your peers. Nonetheless, you committed to your studies, persevered, and completed primary school successfully.”

She continued: “We congratulate you, Syesha, your family, school, and community. As you embark on your high-school journey, we wish you all the best and look forward to hearing of your numerous achievements to come.”

Mr. Vandyke Pratt, Chairman of the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Foundation, expressed gratitude to sponsors like CIBC FirstCaribbean for investing in the future of the nominees.

“We owe a great debt of gratitude to our corporate and individual sponsors, without whom this programme would not be possible. We salute these individuals and corporate entities that have deemed it to be of great significance- even in these tumultuous times- to invest in the future of The Bahamas via this program,” he said.

Since the programme’s inception, more than 122 schools in Nassau, Grand Bahama and the Family Islands have benefited.

In 2019, CIBC FirstCaribbean partnered with the Foundation to award Megan Storr, who represented The Meridian School, with a $2,000 scholarship. Megan used this financial award to support her high school tenure at Windsor Preparatory School.
