Percy the Potcake is off on another exciting adventure with his friends, and he is keen on showing them the wonders of the Islands of the Bahamas.
Percy is the brainchild of Antoine Thompson, who created this character when he realized that there was no local mascot for Bahamian children to learn from, or one to teach them their very own unique culture.
Percy the travelling potcake has a few friendly travel buddies that are transported in a wisp of colorful mist to each island of The Bahamas to learn about their one-of-a-kind features. "I'm trying to get our children to be aware that The Bahamas is more than just New Providence," says Thompson.
“You can find adventurous things to do on Andros, Eleuthera and Inagua, just to name a few. Each island has its own exciting features, and I want the children to know the family islands are a place to get excited about visiting.”
Thompson said we as a nation have done a poor job at marketing The Bahamas for Bahamians, and so he and Percy are indoctrinating the splendours of the islands in the country’s kinds at an early age, and from “a child’s point of view.”
“It's all about trying to get the children excited about going to the family islands,” he said. Thompson added that Bahamian children are not apprised of a lot of the history and geography of the different islands; and so Percy takes care of that too.
Percy will be live on stage for his first solo show March 24th at the Holy Trinity Activity Centre with his pal Bruno the Bulldog from Jamaica.
They will be exploring different islands and searching for a magical bone that turns anything into dog food.
Percy has been busy since he entered the imaginations of Bahamian children. He has created the Adventures of Percy the Potcake and Friends children's book, puzzles, a coloring book and t-shirts.
Percy has also been creating important public service announcements to get timely information to the nation’s youth.
