Trumpeting the Boys' Brigade

The 23rd Company of The Boys’ Brigade celebrates its 47th anniversary on November 1st. With another year of excitement and character building under its belt, the organisation hopes to increase its membership and ultimately make a greater social impact in a wider community.

Captain Henry Curry, leader of the 23rd Company based at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, said: “The Boys’ Brigade is about teaching young men how to be good citizens, based on Christian principles. We train them and hope that by making a difference in their personal lives and their academics, we can shape their future for the better and in turn, help the country. The more boys we reach, the bigger our impact.

“We hope to go into the schools to boost our membership. We have about 40 boys right now, and our objective is to reach 50 for the year.”

The Boys’ Brigade is the oldest uniformed Christian organisation for boys.

“Boys’ Brigade is built on two pillars: discipline and religion,” Captain Curry said. “Our objective is the advancement of Christ’s kingdom among boys and the promotion of obedience, reverence, discipline, and self-respect. We try to mould the boy to be a better man.”

Consolidated Water (Bahamas) Ltd. (CWCO) supports The Boys’ Brigade in their mission as a yearly sponsor for their summer camp. This year the donation went towards helping the members attend The Boys’ Brigade’s Caribbean International Camp in Antigua, where more than 14 countries were represented.

Captain Curry spoke on the recent camp’s success. “I was a part of the counselling team. We had a lot of activities those two weeks. The boys went kayaking, swimming, beach clean-up, and attended church services and talks on nutrition, first aid, and knot-tying.

“The opening ceremony was new this year,” Captain Curry lauded, “where each country’s flag was hoisted and their national anthem was played. It was amazing.”

Four-year Boys’ Brigade member Shane Oliver, 12, shared his exciting experiences at this year’s camp.

“Boys’ Brigade can take you across the world. I met people from Denmark, Trinidad, and Montserrat. We went hiking and zip-lining, visited stingray city, a nature park, and the beach. There were drills and group competitions and training in outdoor survival skills.”

As five-year sponsors, CWCO consistently works with The Boys’ Brigade as the organisation seeks to bring these memorable, character-building experiences to more young males in the country. “Consolidated Water is proud to sponsor The Boys’ Brigade,” general manager Bryan Russell said.

“We’ve been involved since 2013, and it’s really more of a relationship than just a sponsorship. We see the work they’re doing in the community and how they’ve been able to change the lives of so many young men. If we can help them reach and support more of these young men so they have a positive impact in society, we’re more than happy.”

“I consider it more of a partnership,” Captain Curry said of the cooperation’s support. “This is something we look forward to each year – especially because some of these boys come from low income homes.

“It takes commitment, and unfortunately we don’t have the manpower required to really make the difference we want to make. We want to grow our numbers, and we need financial support and also volunteers – people willing to give their time and knowledge to help mentor these boys. We want the numbers, but we need to able to support them. We can always count on CWCO, and for that we’re very grateful.”

The Boys Brigade is ‘fishing for young men,’ to reference the Biblical phrase, as the organisation aims to train up the future generation of The Bahamas into model citizens.
