Sponsors Drum up to Support Walk for the Cure

With the CIBC FirstCaribbean “Walk for the Cure” being held this Sunday, October 1, the bank has taken to social media to put a voice and a face to the sponsors of the event.

Corporate sponsors of the 6th annual charity run/walk for cancer awareness gathered to produce short videos highlighting why they support the cause and to encourage community members to participate.

“We know that cancer is a terrible disease that affects so many Bahamians,” said O’Neil Bain, Marketing Coordinator at Rubis Bahamas Ltd., “and we hope that through this contribution we’re helping to move one step closer to a cure.”

Marketing Director for Doctor’s Hospital Jessica Robertson said: “We feel it is very important for everyone to stand behind the ‘Walk for the Cure’ because too many Bahamian women are suffering from breast cancer. Prevention is better than cure, so we encourage every woman – once you turn 40, get your mammogram.”

CIBC FirstCaribbean Marketing Manager Maya Nottage echoed these sentiments. “A major part of why this campaign is held is to increase awareness of the importance of doing screening tests, being aware of your body and thinking about your future wellbeing. You have to take control of your health. No one else can do it for you.”

Trevor Torzsas, Executive Co-Chair of Walk for the Cure and Managing Director of Cards & Customer Relationship Strategy, added, “Every cent of the money that we raise is donated to local cancer support organizations. They’re doing such good work and we’re proud to be able to support them. We’re also extremely grateful to all of the other corporate sponsors who are donating money and putting teams forward to participate in Sunday’s event. It’s a real community effort.

“My hope is that everyone enjoys the experience, the sense of community that the event brings, and to encourage those in the fight to keep going. We’re here to support them. That’s what this Walk is all about.”

The Walk features two routes: a short route that takes participants from the Goodman’s Bay Corporate Centre to the Melia Nassau Beach All-Inclusive hotel and back, and a longer route from Goodman’s Bay Corporate Centre to Sandals Resort and back.

After working up a sweat, participants can keep their hearts pumping with a series of community-centred “after party” activities including aerobics, a light cool down, breakfast, a kiddie corner with face painting and games and an inspiring praise and worship church service.

Milo B Butler and Sons Lt., Anachronist Spine Institute and Therapy, Bentonite Beauty Clay, Aetos Holdings (Wendy’s, Marco’s, Popeye’s), Colina Insurance, BTC Business, Lowe’s Wholesale, and the Melia Nassau Beach Hotel are just a few of the vendors who will help to create a post-Walk Health Fair featuring giveaways and special offers. Representatives of Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group and the Cancer Society will also be present to share information about cancer awareness and to offer support.

Torzsas added, “We’ve had a great response from the public, so we’re expecting the number of registrations requested to go through the roof this week. We’re very excited and still trying to reach our $100,000 target.”

CIBC FirstCaribbean’s 6th annual Walk for the Cure takes place on October 1 in New Providence, September 30 in Marsh Harbour, Abaco, October 14 in Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera and October 28 in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Anyone interested in participating can visit their nearest CIBC FirstCaribbean branch for more details and registration. On-site registration will also be available on the day of the event.
