For several years, Abaco Darts players have ranked among the top nationally and internationally. They are keeping their reputation this year also as four Abaconians will be members of the National Darts Team that will participate in the Darts World Cup held in Japan this year.
Abaconians Angela Russell, Shane Sawyer, Dwight Miller, Robin Albury together with Christian Knowles, Sandra Ferguson, and Liz Kemp from Nassau as well as Wayne “Fish” Copeland from Grand Bahama will be shooting darts in Kobi, during the first week of October.
Abaco player, Jessica Cook, qualified but will not accompany her team mates as she was injured; she will be replaced by India Sweeting, the youngest member of the National Team.
They will be accompanied by the men’s coach, Byron Johnson and the women’s coach, Anishka Maycock. Kevin Hicks, the National Team Manager and President of The Bahamas Darts Federation, will also travel to Japan.
Some of the players heading to Japan: Christian Knowles, Wayne Copeland, Byron Johnson, Angela Russell, Kevin Hicks, Dwight Miller, Malcolm Spicer, Robin Albury and Shane Sawyer.
Mr. Spicer, President Emeritus of The Bahamas Darts Federation, has not yet decided if he will accompany the Bahamian players to Japan.
Mr. Hicks said that the group will most likely leave the country the last day of September.
In the meantime, the local Sid’s Pub’s Snipers won the Champs Cup, getting the trophy for the best team out of all the participating islands and leagues.
Abaco presently has four teams in its league including the Sid’s Pub Snipers, the Mighty Sands Drinkers, the Island Boys Rebels and the Island Bar Strollers.
New Providence counts twenty five teams in its league, Grand Bahama seven teams and Eleuthera four teams.
The Sid’s Pub Snipers were the winners of the Abaco League; the Paradise Games were the winners of the New Providence’s League and the Strong Back won the first place of the Grand Bahama’s League.
The games for the Champ’s Cup took place in Marsh Harbour at The Zone on Don Mackay Boulevard on Friday June 9 and 10, 2017. Grand Bahama and New Providence were represented with eight players each as was Abaco. The Eleutherians did not participate.
The Strong Back players were the first to be eliminated, so the ultimate challenge was between the Paradise Games and the Sid’s Pub Snipers; the final victory going to the Snipers.
According to Mr. Hicks, Junior Albury was the MVP who contributed to the Abaco team’s victory. He won a game decisive in the outcome of the Tournament.
Robin Albury, with the Sid’s Pub Snipers, won a trophy for eighteen tons, the most tons of the Champs Cup.
Anderson Lewis with the Paradise Games was awarded with the highest finish with 100 points. Christian Knowles also with the Paradise Games team won a trophy for the lowest darts game.
