Police hunting men selling guns on Facebook

OFFICER-in-Charge of the Central Detective Unit, Chief Superintendent Clayton Fernander, said police are actively seeking two men who posted separate videos on Facebook flaunting illegal weapons and offering the guns for sale.

In an interview with The Tribune, Chief Supt. Fernander said police are “following up” on the posts with a view to “identifying the individuals” immediately.

In the first video, which has been shared on social media hundreds of times, two unidentified men are seen sitting in a car with several weapons. The passenger, who was wearing blue jeans, is shown with three guns on his lap.

He described the first gun as “Nina” and said the other two weapons are .45 pistols.

In the other video, which was also shared on social media, a young man is heard saying “send the money, send y’all money” while panning a camera over several rifles and automatic pistols laid out on a bed.

No faces were shown in either video.

“We take these matters very seriously,” Chief Supt. Fernander said.

“Anything that involves weapons, especially illegal guns we will not take lightly. We will find the persons involved.”

Chief Supt. Fernander said police have also stepped up patrols in preparation for the Christmas holidays and have increased manpower on the streets.

“We know how things can get during the holidays and we want to ensure the public that the police are looking out for them,” Chief Supt. Fernander said.

“We are nearing Christmas and have increased our patrols. Around this time, we always ensure that our citizens are protected. So we will be out in full force in the streets, we will be everywhere in the shopping centres and in the malls to ensure that shoppers are safe. But we will also be through the side corners ensuring that smaller establishments, the mom and pop shops, are protected.”

In August 2015, police arrested a 26-year-old man after several photos surfaced on social media of him posing with handguns and suspected marijuana along with an infant.

That same month, police arrested a 20-year-old woman for questioning over firearms possession in response to a recent social media posting of a woman posing with a high-powered assault rifle.
