Hubert Chipman talks with a forked tongue

Dear Editor,

St. Anne's Hubert Chipman talks with a forked tongue. In early May Chipman told The Tribune that he supports FNM Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis 100 percent after a confidential correspondence between FNM MPs was released to the press by Deep Throat. Deep Throat has been working feverishly behind the scenes over the past few years to sabotage Minnis. We all know who Deep Throat is.

Now it is being reported by media outlets around The Bahamas that a group of six renegade FNM MPs have issued an ultimatum to Minnis: Either he calls for an early convention or face being removed as Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition leader. We were initially taken aback after hearing that Chipman is among the six renegades, in light of the fact that he stated that he fully supports the FNM leader. However, the current move by Chipman and others belies what he told The Tribune in early May. It shows that he was not being completely candid.

Chipman may have also taken part in a plot late last year to oust Minnis. It is apparent to many FNMs that Chipman and Co. don't want Minnis as leader. He should have stated this in early May rather than engaging in a senseless cloak and dagger drama with the press and the Bahamian people.

FNMs Underground is not burying its head in the sand with the aim of pretending that Minnis does not have his share of deficiencies. We concede the point that Minnis is a work in progress. However, what is not currently being discussed is that Chipman and Co. also have their fair share of deficiencies like the leader they are attempting to topple.

We get the feeling that Chipman is attempting to deflect attention from his own uninspiring performance in Parliament by focusing solely on Minnis' shortcomings. While FNMs Underground is willing to concede that Minnis, at least at times, has been lackluster in Parliament, anyone who has listened to Chipman's contributions will also come to the same conclusion. Chipman heads the powerful Public Accounts Committee. Yet, what has he done to ensure that taxpayers monies are not being misspent?

What has he done to ensure transparency by the Christie government? The entire FNM parliamentary caucus has underwhelmed. The FNM finds itself in shambles because it is saddled with a bunch of uninspiring MPs who were given safe areas to run in the last election, Chipman included. The FNMs Underground cannot trust Chipman. If Minnis wins in convention, Chipman cannot and should not expect to be renominated after what he has done to the FNM leader.
