Dean and Hall see action at world gymnastics championships

Kianna Dean and Simone Hall both saw action over the weekend, as the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships got underway in Glasgow, Scotland.

In the women's team qualifying competition on Friday, Dean, 18, had an all-around score of 36.198 to finish 186th overall, failing to qualify for the finals. She scored a 12.700 on vault, a 6.166 on the uneven bars, a 7.566 on the balance beam and a 9.766 on the floor exercise. On the vault, she got a 4.200 for difficulty and a 8.500 for execution.

On the uneven bars, Dean had a 1.700 for difficulty and a 4.466 for execution. On the balance beam, Dean scored a 2.500 for difficulty and a 5.066 for execution; and on the floor, Dean scored a 3.000 for difficulty and a 6.866 for execution. She was penalized 0.10 points.

In the uneven bars qualifying, both Dean and Hall competed, and both failed to make the finals. Hall, 21, was 226th overall with a score of 7.700 - 2.300 on difficulty and 5.400 on execution; and Dean was 32nd overall with a score of 6.166 - 1.700 on difficulty and 4.466 on execution. Just Dean competed in the balance beam qualifying. She had a total score of 7.566  - 2.500 on difficulty and 5.066 on execution.

Both Bahamian youngsters competed in the floor exercise qualifying competition. Hall was 226th overall with a total of 10.633 - 4.200 on difficulty and 6.733 on execution. She was penalized 0.30 points. Dean was 230th overall with a score of 9.766 - 3.000 on difficulty and 6.866 on execution. She was penalized 0.10 points.

This represented the first time that Bahamians took part in the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) World Championships. The event features over 1,000 gymnasts from 84 nations vying for the respective world titles in the 10-day competition which will wrap up on November 1 at The SSE Hydro arena in Glasgow - the same venue which hosted the gymnastics competition of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The world artistic gymnastics championships is the biggest gymnastics meet in the world, and serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
