Airbnb shows other destinations above Bahamas in rental demand

The Bahamas fits snugly in the middle of 22 regional destinations rated by popular lodging rental website airbnb on the basis of available rental property listings. Figures compiled by Caribbean Journal reveal that The Bahamas ranked 11th of 22 regional destinations with 534 available rental listings. As of yesterday, airbnb displayed 535 available listings in The Bahamas with an average daily fee of $243.

Launched in 2008, the service allowing users to rent out rooms and properties has exploded in popularity in recent years, particularly among young and budget travelers. However, the site's appeal has since expanded to encompass luxury homeowners seeking to rent their properties. The service currently has over 1,000,000 listing in 190 countries. The Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Cancun, and Cuba all topped the list with over 1,000 rental properties. However, Guadeloupe emerged as the clear regional standout, with over 1,000 rental property listings despite its relatively small population of approximately 406,000 as of 2013. Although it should come as no surprise that The Bahamas lacked the rental room inventory of larger countries, several similarly or less populated countries beat out The Bahamas with Martinique and Barbados outperforming The Bahamas with 986 and 943 listings, respectively.

While it remains to be seen whether The Bahamas will capitalize on the growing number of airbnb users, The Bahamas' online tourism presence received a separate boon earlier this week after HotelTonight, a leading hotel booking app, added the country to its roster.
