THE Grand Bahama community is mourning the loss of well-known Grand Bahamian Havard Cooper Sr.

Mr Cooper – who rose from poverty to become a very successful and wealthy businessman – was an example to many that anything is possible with hard work and determination. #He first opened a meat market and general food store in Pinder’s Point. #He later brought the first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise to Freeport during the early years, and later brought the Burger King franchise. #He expanded the businesses and opened several KFC’s and a BK outlet. Mr Cooper also acquired the Pizza Hut franchise and the Pollo Tropical franchise. #He invested in other businesses in Grand Bahama, acquiring LMR Drugs, Halt Industries, and GB Glass and Windows. After many years at the helm, Mr Cooper retired and turned over the businesses to his children. #In addition to being a successful entrepreneur, Mr Cooper was also a Baptist Reverend. He was an author and wrote his autobiography, “My Story, His Glory.” #Minister of State for Grand Bahama and Finance Senator Kwasi Thompson issued a press statement on behalf of the Office of the Prime Minister in Grand Bahama, expressing heartfelt condolences to the Cooper family on the passing of Rev. Havard Cooper. #He said Rev. Cooper was a “patriarch, who rose from humble beginnings in Grand Bahama to become a highly respected citizen of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. #“In his autobiography, ‘My Story His Glory’, Reverend Cooper is described as ‘a once-poor child who overcame adversity to become a visionary, entrepreneur, successful Christian businessman and patriarch of a large influential Bahamian family.”

Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation Returns to 2021 EAA AirVenture Oshkosh Show

Tue, Jul 27th 2021, 06:16 PM

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation (BMOTA) team returns to the 2021 Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh Show, July 25-August 1, in Wisconsin. Last year, the show was cancelled due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Deemed the “World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration,” and the largest aviation show in the world, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, prior to Covid-19, attracted in excess of 600,000 aviation enthusiasts, 10,000 aircraft and almost 1,000 media professionals from around the world.

The Bahamas team, comprised of tourism, aviation and customs officials, is being led by Mr. Reginald Saunders, Permanent Secretary, BMOTA and Mr. Ellison “Tommy” Thompson, Deputy Director General, BMOTA, who will also meet one-on-one with leading aviation industry partners to discuss business opportunities for The Bahamas.

The leading destination in the Caribbean region for general aviation and private pilot arrivals, The Bahamas is also the first nation to welcome private pilots who operate under BasicMed, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) new medical recertification program.

The Bahamas is also one of only three countries (including USA and Canada) that are part of the International Federal Partnership (IFP) organization, which has a bilateral agreement with EAA, and are all located at Hanger D, the IFP Pavilion.

The Bahamas was also one of the first countries to open its borders quickly and safely to private pilots and boaters, utilizing its aggressive and strict health and safety protocols. To learn more about flying to The Bahamas and its health travel protocols, visit www.bahamas.com.

Davis: Follow rules while we test law

Tue, Jul 27th 2021, 03:37 PM

PROGRESSIVE Liberal Party Leader Philip "Brave" Davis has urged supporters to follow new COVID-19 restrictions, while the party examines avenues for legal recourse against government.

In a press statement yesterday, Mr Davis made a push for people to receive vaccination against the virus, adding the decision to do so remained a personal one. #He stressed that this was the only way for protection from this serious disease and hospitalisation. #“As we are all aware, the Emergency Orders restrict campaigning and canvassing to vaccinated individuals,” Mr Davis said in a brief statement. #“The Competent Authority permits many activities which pose a much greater risk of transmission of COVID. As we examine avenues for legal recourse, we ask that you follow the Emergency Orders. Candidates and their teams cannot campaign if unvaccinated.” #He continued: “However, although you are — for the moment — restricted from campaigning, the right to free speech has not been extinguished. You are free to converse with Bahamians about any topics you wish, including the economic and health crisis. #“The government has failed badly to prepare the country for the Delta variant. We are facing a serious health crisis, one that is already overwhelming the public health system and is likely to seriously worsen. #“The decision regarding vaccination remains a personal one. We continue to encourage all to get vaccinated. This remains the best way to protect yourself from serious disease and hospitalisation.” #Mr Davis’ statement followed that of party chairman Fred Mitchell who said the PLP will not change its campaign protocols to comply with new rules requiring campaigners be vaccinated and their groups be no larger than five. #Health Minister Renward Wells announced the rules during a press conference on Friday.
