Tennessee Never Trails in Defeating NC State 67-58 for Third Place in Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis

Mon, Nov 27th 2017, 12:42 PM

Tennessee sophomore guard Jordan Bone hit a 3-pointer to put the Volunteers up for good against North Carolina State. That doesn’t seem unusual, except that Bone’s shot accounted for the first points of the game.

Tennessee never trailed in defeating NC State 67-58 on Friday to claim third place in the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis. Yet while the Vols led throughout, the Wolfpack were never far behind. Tennessee’s biggest lead in the game was 11 points, and for much of the second half the margin hovered between four and eight.

Grant Williams led the way for the Vols (4-1), finishing with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Bone scored 13 points and Jordan Bowden added 10, including a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left that basically secured the victory.

“It wasn’t really a pretty game the first half,” Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said. “The second half we did a better job of handling the basketball, getting the ball down the floor, attacking the press. … It’s a nice win for us and we’ll leave here knowing a little bit more about our team.”

Allerick Freeman scored a team-high 14 points for NC State (5-2), but he made only 4-of-18 shots from the field and 1-of-8 of his 3-pointers. Overall, the Wolfpack sank just 3-of-16 treys and committed 21 turnovers. They were hampered by a Tennessee defense that had 13 steals and blocked nine shots.

“I feel like we executed, especially on the defensive end,” Williams said. “That’s where the game ended because even though we might not have been able to run our offense, on the defensive end we got it back.

Both teams pulled off upsets in the tournament’s opening round. The Vols prevailed against No. 18 Purdue in overtime, and had a double-digit lead in the second round before falling to eventual tournament champion Villanova. Meanwhile, NC State knocked off No. 2 Arizona.

“The win against Arizona was an unbelievable program-building win,” NC State coach Kevin Keatts said. “It’s a culture-building win. It’s what I envisioned when I took over the program.

“That being said, I want more. Obviously, we would have loved to win the Northern Iowa game and also the game today against Tennessee. But I do feel I saw enough stuff in both those that we can improve on to become that team that beat Arizona.”
