Youth Filmmaking Workshop held in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera

Youth Filmmaking Workshop held in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera

Environmental stewardship and leadership was the mission last week as Tarpum Bay welcomed Executive Director, Malia Cahill, and assistant, Tierra Bartolotti, of Hawaiian based Maui Huliau Foundation. The Maui Huliau Foundation is a nonprofit that promotes environmental literacy through community-based educational experiences.

On June 18th, 20th and 21st local students participated in a Youth Filmmaking Workshop led by Cahill and Bartolotii, in partnership with the Bahamas Plastic Movement, Space 2 Create, and the Eleuthera Arts & Cultural Center.

According to organisers, the  workshop began with students learning the basics of pre-production, filmmaking and editing in order to share their messages of environmental concern. The first assignment was to practically use their new skills to document a beach clean-up at Northside beach, Rock Sound, sponsored by Norton Point and the Rotary Club of Eleuthera and organised by the Bahamas Plastic Movement, Space To Create and The Preston Albury High School Eco Club.

The clean-up offered students the opportunity to take note of how plastic pollution affects marine life and youth were also inspired to create their own videos.

In just a few days students produced creative videos that can be found on YouTube under the Bahamas Plastic Movement account. The videos were also presented to the community the last evening of the workshop, spreading the message of pollution prevention and conservation.

Stop kicking the can

Stop kicking the can

Thu, Jun 30th 2016, 10:41 AM

2016 is a presidential election year in the U.S. and each day we are literally bombarded with politicians, congressmen, senators and potential presidential candidates putting forth their point of view on television. One of these politicians was talking one day about the vital need to do something about the national debt that in the U.S. is trillions and trillions of dollars. This particular politician said, "We have to stop kicking the can further down the road and instead come up with a sensible plan to pay down the national debt instead of putting it off for future generations to have to deal with."

When I heard him say that, I came up with the title of today's article, stop kicking the can, as I know that there are a whole lot of people spread throughout this great big world of ours, who are continually kicking the can further and further down the road of life.

In other words, they are putting off doing something very important, which really needs to be done today, until tomorrow. But my friend, somehow tomorrow never comes as they keep on procrastinating day after day, week after week, month after month, year in and year out. The end result of this constant procrastination means in effect, they habitually put things off never getting anything worthwhile accomplished in life, thus their sad lives are stagnant as they appear to mark time staying in one place all of their life without progressing as they should from day to day. Yes indeed, if you wish to succeed in life, across the board, you most definitely need to stop kicking the can and do it now.

So my friend, let's call today liberation day, the day when you finally liberate yourself from that very destructive habit of habitual procrastination, putting off today very important tasks which should of course be dealt with immediately. In the future, adopt the mantra that I did many years ago, do it now. Don't ever forget, that it is in the end the doers, those who get things done who succeed big time.

total of 96 players took part in the 16th Annual Duke of Edinburgh Semi-Finals Charity Golf Tournament at the Ocean Club Golf Course this past Sunday in support of the Governor General's Youth Awards (GGYA) Programme.

With the help of major sponsors like Bahamas Food Services, Tyreflex Motors, Graycliff, SunTee, Harbourside Marine and John Bull, a donation of $45,000 was made to the program. Over the last decade-plus, their collective contribution has exceeded the $800,000 mark.

K. Darron Turnquest, the Director of Youth in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture along with GGYA Board of Trustees members Susan Glinton, Denise Mortimer, Jack Thompson and Everette Mackey graciously accepted the check from Tournament Coordinator and Atlantis Public Relations Manager Eric Hall.

Also bringing remarks on behalf Minister Dr. Daniel Johnson, Turnquest congratulated the sponsors for their support and the golfers for their efforts and for believing in the work of the program. He stressed upon the attendees the importance of such programs for young people at a time when so many are at-risk and facing challenging times.

While the considerable charitable donation is the most important aspect of the tournament, there is another major incentive for the players; a chance to represent The Bahamas at the Duke of Edinburgh Cup Finals in Windsor, Great Britain. The all-expense paid trip to the United Kingdom (October 2-6, 2016) includes accommodation, flights, meals and golf at top courses. Also, a member of the Royal Family attends the awards dinner, which is held at Windsor Castle.

Winning the event and traveling to the United Kingdom to represent The Bahamas were Billy Holowesko and David Bethel representing Team Odyssey Aviation who shot a 57. Joining them are runners-up Blake Nolan and Matt Freilich, representing Team Higgs and Kelly who scored a 58.
