Hope for the FNM
Thu, Jan 31st 2013, 10:21 AM
The Free National Movement (FNM) was having a bad time. It lost three elections. Its leader resigned. Its new leader has been criticized from within and by outsiders for not having the stuff to lead the party to victory. Then came the gambling referendum. The FNM advised voters to say no. Hubert Ingraham even emerged from retirement and also said no. Enough people agreed with the FNM and the church and the PLP and gaming bosses were defeated. For FNM Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis, this was a needed win. And in celebratory fashion, Minnis took to television Tuesday night to gloat.
"My fellow Bahamians, the votes are counted and the results are in. The will of the people is now clear: Bahamians will not allow any factional interest groups, be they in government or in the private sector, to attack, demean, or besmirch our democracy and way of life," he said in a national address. "Bahamians have resoundingly re-affirmed the fact that The Bahamas is not a nation for sale." Minnis now must work to build momentum from this win. To do so he has to improve his personal presentation in order to convince Bahamians he can be their prime minister. The good doctor must become a better public speaker, developing a more commanding presence.
He needs to up the ferocity and meaningfulness of his attacks against the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) in Parliament, making Bahamians believe he is a fighter. He needs to be more strategic. He let the PLP off the hook with the nolle prosequi involving the attorney general and the education minister. Minnis also needs to tell his story more. How many times have we heard Ingraham tell of being a poor boy from Abaco with no shoes? How many times have we heard Perry Christie talk of being put out of school?
The doctor needs to let people know and know often of his rags to riches story. Voters only connect with people they think they know. And they want to know that that journey made him tough. "Having staked all its political capital, and having lost their bet, there is a very serious question as to whether this Christie-PLP administration has any moral authority left to continue in government," said Minnis in the address. That is the tough talk and tone the opposition leader needs to maintain while also evolving his relationship with the people. The FNM now has a little hope as a result of Christie's gambling debacle. Let's see if the party can capitalize on it.
