A man with a history of violent attacks against prepubescent boys was yesterday sentenced to death for the murder of 11-year-old Marco Archer.
Justice Bernard Turner determined that Kofhe Goodman's murder of little Marco satisfied the criteria set by the Privy Council for the imposition of the discretionary death penalty.
Turner said the crime fell within the "worst of the worst" and that Goodman showed no prospect of reform due to his continued attacks against this
"vulnerable segment of society".
Turner said, "This case is a clear and compelling case for the ultimate sentence of death, to satisfy the requirements of due punishment for the murder of this child and to protect this society from any further predatory conduct by this convict at any time in the future."
Goodman showed no emotion when Turner pronounced the death sentence.
He smiled and chatted with his lawyer Geoffrey Farquharson, who notified the court of his intention to appeal the conviction and sentence.
Marco's relatives cried, as they did throughout most of the trial. Outside court, Marco's mother, Tryphemia Meadows, said putting Goodman to death would not bring her son back, but he would be prevented from hurting any more little boys.
Goodman was released from prison in October 2010 after serving two-thirds of an 18-year sentence for the attempted murder of a 10-year-old boy.
Goodman stabbed the boy 17 times with a screwdriver after he resisted a sexual attack.
He was also convicted of the sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy, who was found murdered in 1989.
Marco was last seen alive on September 23, 2011 when he left his mother's home at Brougham Street to buy candy from a neighborhood store.
His remains were discovered shrouded in a sheet and plastic in a vacant lot behind a condominium complex owned by the convict's mother. The clothing Marco was last seen wearing was found in a garbage bin in front of the complex.
Turner said he agreed that the evidence established that the deceased was kidnapped.
Goodman became the second person this month to receive the death penalty.
Convicted contract killer Anthony Clarke Sr. was sentenced to death for the murder of Aleus Tilus.
