DAEGU WORLDS

At these Daegu World Championships, Grand Bahamian Raymond Higgs is vying to accomplish something that few others have - to reach a World level final in two separate field events. He finished eighth in the High Jump final at the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships in 2008 and will now be aiming to reach the final of the Men's Long Jump at the Senior World Championships.

The three-time CARIFTA gold medalist in the High Jump broke through on the Long Jump scene last year and really took it to another level this year. With his 8.15m (26' 9") leap in May, he became The Bahamas' third best long jumper ever, and surpassed the 'B' qualifying standard for the Daegu World Championships.

The only Bahamians who have jumped further are Osbourne Moxey and national record holder Craig Hepburn. Raymond's personal best in the High Jump is 2.21m (7' 3"), and as verification to his versatility, he has a personal best of 14.94m (49' 0-1/4") in the Triple Jump. The 20-year-old rising star is probably the only Bahamian ever to jump 26 feet in the Long Jump and seven feet in the High Jump.

With the 2011 IAAF World Championships less than two weeks away, The Nassau Guardian's Sports Section will feature an athlete of Team Bahamas every day leading up to the championships. An 18-member team was ratified by the BAAA last week. The championships will run from August 27 - September 4, in Daegu, South Korea.
