Road to University Preparations Underway

The Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and The College of The Bahamas continue, in earnest, to prepare for The College’s historic transition to the University of The Bahamas (UB).

The University’s Charter Day is designated as November 10th, 2016, the same day that a plaque memorializing its establishment will be unveiled, and Dr. Rodney Smith will be inaugurated as President.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, the original schedule of UB Charter Events has been amended, considering the enormity of the devastation, and the need for the nation to contribute to desperately-needed relief and restoration efforts.

College of The Bahamas President Dr. Rodney D. Smith recently updated the media on the activities planned for UB Charter Week -- recognized as a “pivotal” moment in Bahamian history that the Bahamian community can proudly support.

COB President Dr. Rodney D. Smith recently gave an update on the activities planned for UB Charter Week.

“While the Charter Day of the University of The Bahamas is an historic milestone of national, regional and international significance, we are compelled to ensure that this transition is observed in a manner which reflects our restoration priority, said Dr. Smith.

“We have done this in deference to the national focus, which must now be placed on healing, rebuilding and rebounding.”

Accordingly, The College has tapered and, in some cases, consolidated University of The Bahamas Charter events in an amended schedule:

•          Service of Thanksgiving on Sunday, November 6, at 3:00 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral.

•          ‘UB Blue Day!’ celebration on Monday, November 7, in which the public can participate by wearing UB blue T-shirts and engaging with The College through social media in the Road to University campaign.

•          Panel of Presidents on Wednesday, November 9, at 6:30 p.m. at The College of The Bahamas Performing Arts Centre where an esteemed panel of current and former university presidents will address the subject of the university in the community.

•          UB Charter Day & President’s Inauguration will be held on Thursday, November 10, at 10:30 a.m., at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium. The public is invited to attend and be a part of history in the making.

•          On Friday, November 11, at 10:00 a.m. at the Oakes Field Campus a road renaming ceremony will be held.

The President’s Gala Soiree and the commemorative events scheduled for Grand Bahama have been postponed.
