Despite harsh words, McCartney willing to make peace with FNM for coalition

Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Leader Branville McCartney yesterday said that if his party formed a coalition with the Official Opposition, there would be no name calling, only his party's full support.

"I am talking hypothetically on how things would work," he told reporters at Halsbury Chambers. "The idea would be I would assume that we don't run against each other in particular seats and we support each other in the seats that the respective parties are running in."

Asked if there would be any criticism involved, McCartney reiterated that there would be support.

"The base that the DNA would have in a seat that the FNM (Free National Movement) is running in or if it's another party we are dealing with, we support that person," he said. "We support them. If they are having a rally, we support them. We take our people and put behind them and vise versa."

The DNA leader has said that a coalition between the two opposition parties would lead to the toppling of the current Christie administration, which he described as the PLP's worst nightmare.

On Wednesday, FNM leader Dr. Hubert Minnis said although he was unsure how a coalition would work, he was open to discussing the possibility.

FNM Chairman Sidney Collie has also supported the idea of a coalition

In the 2012 general election, the DNA secured 8.5 percent of the vote, the FNM secured 42.1 percent of the vote and the PLP received 48.6 percent of the vote. However, over the past week the McCartney and FNM leader Dr. Hubert Minnis have exchanged barbs in the media.

McCartney has said joining the FNM would be like changing cabins on the Titanic, while Minnis has referred to the attitude of the DNA leader as bombastic and arrogant.

McCartney said yesterday that he is not at all offended by Minnis' remarks about him.

"I don't take offense to what Dr. Minnis said of me," he said. "I don't take offense at all. I mean, not at all. I have not bashed the good doctor."

He added that what he spoke about the FNM was truth.

McCartney said that his main goal is to oust the PLP and bring about good governance for The Bahamas, but not before the FNM does some cleaning up of its own.

"You have certain people in the FNM doing all kind of foolishness left, right and center and the same thing is happening," he said. "That ain't happening under the DNA. Rest assured if there were to be any type of coalition you got to clean up, otherwise, prior to. Foolishness goes on there too."

Asked if he agreed that the winner with the most seats would be overall leader, McCartney replied, "I assume that would be the case."

He said if Minnis were to be leader, he would have to be toughened up to tackle the country's issues.

"If we can do that and if that's the way it works out, it works out," he said.
