An Atlantis employee said police officers assaulted her friend as they were heading home from work around 4.30 Monday morning.

Felicia Campbell, a 29-year-old casino waitress, said she was in the backseat of fellow Atlantis employee Maxine Adderley, when a police car pulled them over so forcefully that they nearly crashed into a utility pole. They had just dropped a friend off and were on Taylor Street when they were stopped.

She said one of two plainclothes officers got out of a police car marked for the southeastern division and approached the car. Campbell said the officer refused to identify himself and insisted Adderley step out of the car.

When she did, Campbell said he pushed and slapped Adderley. She stayed in the car and called 919, telling an operator that her friend was being assaulted.

The officer accused Ms Adderley of being possessed when she started to pray for help, relaxing his grip only when a man came out of his house to see what was happening.

Campbell said the officer handcuffed her screaming friend, dragged her to the ground and put his foot on her back before pushing her into their police vehicle.

"Maxine was still screaming and I told the operator on the phone to send someone to help."

The two officers refused to identify themselves, even after other policemen showed up. Adderley taken away and police impounded her car, leaving Ms. Campbell on the side of the street. She told the police operator that the officers had left her and they sent an inspector to take her home.

Campbell did not find out what happened to her friend for 12 hours, when police told her she was taken to the South Beach police station and then the hospital for treatment.

Crying as she recalled the ordeal, Campbell said, "There were only the two of us and as much as she screamed, nobody helped".

"The officer assaulted her for no reason. She didn't have a weapon, we weren't drinking, we were going home from work and they could plainly see that."

Ms Campbell said she reported the incident to the Complaints and Corruption Unit (CCU) of the Royal Bahamas Police Force and police press liaison officer Sergeant Chrislyn Skippings confirmed the CCU is investigating the incident.
