MAX brings fans the opportunity to catch up on the new drama series The Knick, directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Clive Owen, with a retransmission of the third episode on Friday, September 5th. The series, which premiered on August 15th in the Caribbean, will resume with the debut of episode four on September 12 on MAX, a channel from the HBO package.

Set in New York City in 1900, The Knick – short for the Knickerbocker Hospital – centers on the trailblazing surgeons, nurses and staff pushing the boundaries of medicine in a time of shockingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics. Brilliant lead surgeon John Thackery (Golden Globe® winner and Oscar® nominee Clive Owen) tests the limits of medicine, morals and race relations in an era where social norms were slow to change. Directed by Oscar® winner Steven Soderbergh, the series shows how the combination of skill, pride and luck influenced the evolution of modern medicine and how the growing technology boosted the Industrial Revolution to new and unchartered heights.

In episode three, “The Busy Flea,” Thackery evaluates whether to perform surgery on a former flame. He orders Gallinger and Chickering to experiment on pigs, while Barrow goes to extremes in order to pay off a debt and recover a missing tooth. After a bad day at work, Edwards takes out his frustrations at a local bar, and Cornelia is relieved when her pleas about treating a patient with typhoid fever are finally heard.

The series continues with its fourth episode, “Where’s the Dignity,” on Friday, Sept. 12. Edwards forces Thackery’s hand during surgery, angering Eleanor. In recovery, Abigail regrets her past choices involving Thackery, as Cleary and Sister Harriet strike deal after deal. Bertie’s father scolds his son for his career choices, and Lucy learns of Thackery’s secret life.

The Knick, composed of 10 episodes, was created by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler and directed by Steven Soderbergh, who also served as executive producers along with Gregory Jacobs, Michael Sugar and Clive Owen; produced by Michael Polaire and supervising producer Steven Katz. Peter Andrews served as director of photography, with editing by Mary Ann Bernard, music by Cliff Martinez and casting by Carmen Cuba, CSA.

Production designer Howard Cummings recreated New York circa 1900 in and around Brooklyn and downtown Manhattan, with interiors for the hospital and other sets filmed at the Cine Magic East River Studio soundstages. Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick created the period wardrobe for the cast and the extras. Dr. Stanley Burns, archivist of the world’s greatest collection of early medical photography, served as historical technical medical adviser, working closely with production and the actors to make the hospital scenes realistic and authentic to the times.
