Atlantis Paradise Island hosted the 21st annual Duke of Edinburgh Cup Bahamas Semi Finals Charity Golf Tournament on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at the Ocean Club Golf Course. The event, which is organized annually by Atlantis, was a huge success with over 100 golfers participating in the tournament.

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award program is proudly delivered by the Governor General's Youth Award (GGYA). It is a global program that challenges young people to develop new skills, get physically active, give back to their communities and experience adventures. The proceeds from the golf tournament will be donated to the GGYA, to help with the work that they do across the Bahamas.

"Atlantis is thankful to all sponsors and participants who have partnered with us again, and we are thrilled to announce that with their help, this year's Duke of Edinburgh Cup Semi-Finals Charity Golf Tournament raised $100,000 for the Governor General's Youth Award Program," said Viana Gardiner, Atlantis' vice president of public affairs and special projects.

The Duke of Edinburgh Charity Golf Tournament has become an important annual event in The Bahamas, bringing together golf enthusiasts, business leaders, and philanthropists to support this youth development program. Fidelity Bank & Trust and Doctor's Hospital were this year's gold sponsors. The Cable Group of Companies was the silver sponsor, and corporate bronze sponsors included RBC, Graham Thompson, and FX Pro.

Corona Leads Clean-Up of Coral Harbour Beach

Tue, Jun 20th 2023, 10:18 AM

In keeping with the brand's commitment to the environment and in celebration of World Oceans Day 2023, Corona hosted a beach cleanup that saw Bahamians fill trash bags with plastics and other garbage removed from the shore of Coral Harbour Beach on Saturday, June 10th.

The event was well attended, and volunteers enjoyed their time cleaning the beach, all in celebration of the global day of preserving marine environments around the world.

Corona Brand Coordinator Dante McDonald said this year’s World Oceans Day theme ‘Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing’, speaks well to The Bahamas’ position and plight given its fight for more sustainable initiatives.

“We just want to bring awareness to how important it is to keep the ocean and the planet clean,” McDonald said, describing Corona’s oath to preserving the environment. “Anything that has to do with the betterment of the earth and the ocean, Corona is happy to be a part. It’s more than just being about beer, but creating and supporting initiatives that foster protection of the place we call home.”

World Oceans Day is celebrated every year by organizations around the world as a day of recognizing and promoting the value of protecting the ocean and its contributions to the livelihoods of millions of people across the globe.

It’s also a time when the United Nations joins forces with decision makers, scientists, civil societies and activists to put the ocean first.

McDonald said about 25 people attended Saturday’s cleanup, including 15 volunteers, who were treated to a brief after-party, courtesy of Corona.

All attendees were given gloves, Corona t-shirts and paraphernalia, as well as other tools needed to carry out the beach cleanup.

“This is something on our schedule every year and it’s something we certainly look forward to. We’ve been doing the beach cleanup for the past five years and we’re not looking at ways to make it even bigger and better.”

Rotary Road to Peace and PACT assist youth at new juvenile correctional facility

Wed, Jun 7th 2023, 12:54 PM

The Ministry of National Security has overseen the newly renovated Juvenile Correctional Facility at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDOCS), created for youth awaiting court proceedings and with the goal of rehabilitating youth offenders. The facility was given new beds and classroom desks, and visitors were told about the extracurricular, medical, and mental health programs and religious services available that will be offered to residents.

Previously, the dozen young men were at the BDOCS long-term facility with adult offenders. The Rotary Road to Peace Committee and the PACT Urban Peace Program donated 20 kits of tee shirts and undergarments that were purchased from local retailer Sandy’s for juvenile offenders.

Chairman of Road to Peace, Mike Russell and Rotarian Azaleta Ishmael-Newry, co-founder of the PACT program in The Bahamas, worked with Ministry of National Security Consultant Dr. Carlos Reid and Assistant Chaplain Glen Miller for this special presentation to Commissioner Doan Cleare (Acting) at the opening. Mrs Ann Marie Davis, Spouse of the Prime Minister who was on hand for the ribbon-cutting, said it was a good initiative as most people do not think of something as essential as under clothing to give as a donation.

Also in attendance were Minister of National Security, Hon. Wayne Munroe, Minister of Social Services and Urban Renewal, Hon. Obie Wilchcombe, Hon. Glenys Hanna-Martin, Minister of Education and Technical Vocational Training, and other senior officials.

“BDOCS is planting good seeds in the lives of its juvenile residents, a seed that will hopefully turn a new leaf and bear good fruit in the lives of juvenile offenders in the future. It is hoped that the opening of this new facility will optimistically give them renewed hope, purpose, and a new focus”, said Minister Munroe.

Minister Hanna-Martin also stated that she was relieved that juveniles would no longer have to interact with adult offenders.

The Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas created the Rotary Road to Peace Program to address the problem of crime and violence in the country and to develop social-based strategies and proactive interventions to foster change and promote peace. They have also been working towards reducing crime and violence through other projects and partnerships. The PACT Urban Peace Program is one such collaboration. Working in conjunction with the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Renewal, the “PACT LifePlan Coaching Program” for youth in custody has been operating in Toronto, Canada, for 15 years. In New Providence, it is in its initial stages at the Willie Mae Pratt and Simpson Penn Co-Education Unit. More information on the Rotary Road to Peace Program is available on Facebook – Road to Peace Bahamas, and for PACT, www.pactprogram.ca.

Sterling Global and 2Hoops Productions Awards $90,000 to Community Organizations in The Bahamas

Fri, May 26th 2023, 01:53 PM

Sterling Global Financial, Hurricane Hole Marina and 2Hoops Productions will give a generous donation to financially empower three local organizations that help the people of The Bahamas through a unique partnership program.

The premier deep-water marina, its owner and developer, Sterling Global Financial Limited and 2Hoops Productions, announced today that it will donate $90,000 to three community organizations.

The announcement means the three partners of Hurricane Hole Helps — The Bahamas National Trust, The Bahamas Feeding Network, and Lend a Hand Bahamas — will each receive $30,000 to continue their important work around the country.

The financial assistance was made possible by funds raised during 9 live performances of “The Long Weekend,” a comedy staged at the Atlantis Theatre in February. The play was sponsored by Sterling Global Financial, Hurricane Hole, Island Site Development and numerous generous international and local donors. With the help of these sponsors, total net proceeds from the production were directed towards the charitable causes.

Written by Canadian playwright Norm Foster, the two-act, two-hour play was produced by 2Hoops Productions. Bahamian resident and Canadian actress Heather Hodgson Kosoy is the Founder and Artistic Director of 2Hoops Productions. She said she wanted the play to benefit worthy causes: “Comedy with a Cause”. It was a natural fit to select the three partner organizations already working with the marina’s Hurricane Hole Helps program.

David Kosoy, Executive Chairman and Founder of Sterling Global Financial Limited, said sponsoring the production of “The Long Weekend” was a way of helping to bring an entertaining play to Paradise Island while also supporting the hard work of community groups that play an important role in The Bahamas.

“We’re proud to be able to help our neighbors through the Hurricane Hole Helps program,” Kosoy said. “Hurricane Hole Superyacht Marina has always aimed to be a force for good in this country, and our partnership with these three organizations means we could offer financial assistance for their incredible work while also facilitating a live theatrical run of a very funny play right here on Paradise Island.”

Hurricane Hole Helps has partnered with three organizations: The Bahamas National Trust, the steward of 32 national marine and terrestrial parks that works to preserve and enhance the country’s natural resources; The Bahamas Feeding Network, which works to end the hunger crisis; and Lend a Hand Bahamas, which operates a community center that provides educational and skill training, mentorship, life skills development, and more for the socioeconomically underprivileged people of The Bahamas.

In addition to the recently announced Hurricane Hole Helps donation to each of these three organizations, Lend a Hand Bahamas will get a boost in the form of a matching contribution from the Contigo Foundation, which has pledged to match all donations up to $300,000 made toward the development of a second community center in Nassau.
