Authorities quiet on visa probe

Head of the Central Detective Unit Superintendent Paul Rolle yesterday indicated that he did not have all the details on a police investigation into the granting of visas to non-Bahamians.

Rolle said police have been investigating the matter for about two weeks, but he would not say if they were probing Bahamian visas granted to Haitians or other nationalities.

Rolle said police have not made arrests in the matter and will release details once they have more information. "I don't know about arrests," he said.

"I know we are still trying to investigate circumstances and issues with some visas and I'm not aware that anyone was arrested. "We are investigating the circumstances to determine what happened. We don't know what happened, whether or not we have a complaint.

"We will be making a full, comprehensive report when police know the circumstances. I don't have all the information."

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Fred Mitchell would not confirm or deny the investigation yesterday, nor would he say if his ministry turned the matter over to police.

"That's just my position. I'm not making any comment on it at all," he said. Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs Hubert Chipman did not want to comment yesterday.

He said the Free National Movement (FNM) was preparing for a meeting where the matter will be discussed, among other things. Chipman said he will speak when he has more information.
