The prosecution yesterday closed its case against two men accused of the attempted murder of Superintendent Clayton Fernander during a robbery attempt.
Maurice Armbrister and Excel Josey told Justice Carolita Bethell they planned to take the witness stand and call witnesses in their defense.
Before assistant director of public prosecutions Neil Brathwaite ended the Crown's case, the nine-member jury watched a videotaped interview with Josey as he related the events of April 10, 2013 to Inspector Ricardo Hart.
On the tape, Josey showed officers the route that he and Excel took when they followed Fernander to his home off St. Vincent Road from Bamboo Shack on Soldier Road.
Josey said that Fernander was targeted because of his gold neck chain.
According to Josey, he heard gunshots before he got out of Armbrister's white Honda Saber.
Josey said Armbrister came running and they fled in the car.
He said Armbrister realized that he had dropped his phone when they were almost home.
Armbrister also gave a recorded interview. However, the recording had no audio.
The prosecution relied on a written statement by Armbrister. He admitted to being on the scene but denied that he participated in the shooting.
According to the written statement, Tino and "Long Boy" left the car to rob a man they had followed from Bamboo Shack.
Armbrister reportedly told police he heard gunshots a short time later.
Armbrister said he did not know the men's names but he believed that Long Boy's surname was Josey and the Tino's full name was Valentino.
In his testimony, Fernander said he was accosted by two men, one of whom was armed with a gun when he arrived home.
Fernander said Armbrister shot him and Josey yanked his chain from around his neck.
He said both men fled and he saw when Armbrister dropped his phone as he was getting into the vehicle.
Police downloaded selfie pics of Armbrister from the phone and incoming text messages to a Maurice.
Wayne Munroe appears for Armbrister and Jairam Mangra represents Josey.
