Caring For Your Eyes & Mouth

High blood glucose can lead to serious eye disease. So, give your eyes the special care they need.  If you are diabetic, see your eye doctor at least once a year.  Tell your eye doctor if you have diabetes or if a family member has diabetes.  Follow your eye doctor’s instructions regarding contact lens care and wear.  Call your doctor if your eyesight is blurry or you are having trouble reading or seeing; if you notice spots, blind spots, or cobwebs; if you have eye pain or pressure; if your eyes are red most of the time.

People with diabetes are also more likely to have gum infections. A severe gum infection can be slow to heal and can make it hard to control blood glucose levels.  Make sure you see your dentist every six months.  Tell your dentist you have diabetes, and ask what you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy.  Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.  Call your dentist if your gums bleed when you eat or brush; or if you notice any changes in your mouth such as white or red patches.
