Govt Tax Policy Unfair, says Airline CEO

Government is the biggest hindrance to the growth of local aviation companies, charged President and CEO of SkyBahamas Airlines Limited Randy Butler yesterday. Butler expressed concern about, what he described as, high taxes being levied on the industry. These taxes, he added, will inevitably drive Bahamian airlines out of business. The Department of Customs revealed recently that it would seek to recoup a 10 percent customs duty that went unpaid for years on airplanes imported into The Bahamas. Butler said Customs never enforced the 10 percent tax and he insisted the industry is still unclear as to who will be taxed. Customs could collect $100,000 to $700,000 in tax for some aircraft, Butler said....
