How Krystyn beat the summer job search blues....

Tue, Jul 16th 2013, 12:15 PM

Krystyn Netlin Deveaux is a 22 yr old Bahamian Student at the Johnson & Wales University, North Miami campus. Former College: College of the Bahamas via Culinary & Hospitality Management Institute. Former Highschool: Nassau Christian Academy, 2008 Alumni Major: Double major: Culinary Arts/Foodservice Management & Baking & Pastry. Years Left on degree(s): 1 GPA: 3.47

Krystyn says Culinary Arts is her passion; it is what she does best and its where she finds fulfillment and purpose; she says "it's more like a ministry in the sense of being able to comfort and change the mood and viewpoint of an individual through food. It is not only my goal but, rather, my responsibility as a culinary professional to ensure that my passion shines through everything I do; doing everything with a spirit of excellence."

Krystyn came home every summer and was unable to find a job, despite looking for jobs months in advance, calling different establishments while away in school and sending her resume to countless restaurants; going from interview to interview from major hotels to small fine dining restaurants, and hearing people promise that they would call and let her know when to start work after successful "interviews, but never receiving that call. She was also offered a few jobs, but on unfair terms.. working for a pittance (literally), which she says "was not something I am an advocate of." She said "I was very discouraged for the majority of the summer, until I decided to pave the way for my dream of owning an ice cream shop and delicatessen."

Krystyn further explained that "the wait list at Johnson & Wales University's Pastry program is extensive; as a matter of fact, the wait list was about 2 years when I first enrolled into culinary school. Then one day, I got an email, asking if i wanted to join the program, and the rest is history.I love both culinary and baking and pastry, but I have a special love for ice creams."

Krystyn decided to follow her own dream and you can too! What skills do you have? What is it you like to do? Why not think about starting your own business? It may be small and slow, but with consistent efforts, you will reap the rewards...the journey to success starts with one small step.
