GB Foot Ball Week 7 Recap

Game 1 (0-5-0) B&B Galaxy Shockers 00                                          VS (5-0-1) Lady Enforcers 07

The Shockers are my new favorite team. It’s nothing about being the under-dog it’s about the potential they possess! This first year team looks better and better each week but they still lack football fundamentals! These ladies are slowing realizing what the game is about…adjustments! They make the necessary adjustments and can almost recognize what the defense is doing. A solid offseason of fundamentals will be the key to multiple victories next season. #11 Abigail Davis has emerged as “the mobile QB” while #10 Tiffany Major clearly needs more passes thrown her way. Once the defense drops back hit #4 Heather Grant-Bruey in the flats and watch the points add up. The Lady Enforcers have shown why they are the top team this season. They play hard every down, they refuse to give up and they will score on you! No one else runs like #11 Muriel Bonaby and #1 Norell Dorsett is intent on proving critics wrong and that she can pass the ball. Their keys to victory is simple they lead the league in tackles per game on Sunday alone they racked up 15 tackles and 2 sacks. They attack every play, every down on every Sunday with the intent on shutting teams out. Most people don’t realize it but they have given up 0 point so far this season and have a total of 7 INTs in 6 games.

Game 2 (0-5-0) BORCO Oilers 00                                            VS (5-1-0) ISS Marines 14The ISS

Marines seem like a team to beat this season. They manage to win games behind the arm of #88 Lawrence Wood Jr. and the legs #5 Avalon Kelly though as of late many of their key players have not stepped up. The emergence of #10 Nevillon McDonald was a breath of fresh air for the Marines as he and #9 Steven Forbes were able to put points on the board. The defense, save for maybe two players seemed to be non-existent and had they played a more experienced team would have surely been exposed. I like the Marines as a team. They are a solid unit but that solidarity seems a little cracked, if they can hold it together and quit the apparent in-fighting they should make it deep into the playoffs. Every week I say the same thing “the oilers are on the brink of a win”! This week is no exception but they need a change at QB as of yesterday. The defense shows up ready to play, they give their all and they expect the offense to do the same. At some point the decision has to be made, if you change QB now the worse that can happen is that you lose 5 games. At 0-5 it would be insane to keep him behind center. My advice, use him as a blocking tight-end since he has the height and the body for the position. There is still time to make a playoff run but if the much needed personnel changes aren’t made bear in mind that with each week, being on the brink of a win, gets smaller and smaller.

Game 3 (3-2-0) Zorbas Destroyers 06                                      VS (3-3-0) Police Enforcers 07

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I wasn’t completely sold on the “new” Zorbas QB, he had some flashes of brilliance but not enough to immediately vault him to any significant status. On Sunday the only flash would have been the single lightning strike in the distance for a QB that held onto the ball more than any of the wide receivers did. Has Zorbas ever only scored 6 points? Not that I can recall. Lackluster is too strong a word to describe the play of the “Destroyers”. What ever happened to #15 Xavier Stuart and #3 Ricardo Saville? These use to be go to receivers but with only 4 catches between the two, no wonder Zorbas Destroyers struggle to score. On the other hand the Police Enforcers proved that it doesn’t matter if its 1 or 100 – a win is definitely a win! This was a big win for the Enforcers as they try to regain lost stature this season. Despite back to back games they still have a “suspect” offense; the running game is not as strong as it was and despite some of the tallest receivers, opposing corners and have still been able to get the better of them. The defense accumulated 17 tackles against the Destroyers but only 1 sack by #77 Carlton Butler, so there is room for improvement. Will the Enforcers ride the momentum of 2 consecutive wins into their upcoming game… it is purely in their hands.

Game 4 (1-5-0) Westminster Law Runners 19                 VS (3-3-0) Bahama Rock Excavators 14

Nappy is back! After missing the first few games of the season and a very sub-par performance last week, #18 Jamal Turnquest seemed to be back in form as QB of the Westminster Runners as they routed the Bahama Rock Excavators. With 2 passing TDs, 1 rushing TD and a PAT conversion he is clearly trying to make up for lost time. How much running can he do? He seems to connect numerous times with #25 Ferrard Rolle but those receptions don’t add up if they can’t count for 6 points. #11 Shanton Curry is clearing making himself a target and has been a go to guy in the last 2 games. Will they be able to connect in the End Zone to really get the Runner back on track? They still have hope for a run at the post season but hope is just that…hope! A win against Bahama Rock is fine, I mean if you were playing basketball it may mean a bit more. I agree they have less “football” players than other teams but these guys play hard, and they intimidate! #20 Clemente Martin seems to be comfortable on the football field and has made more TD saving stops that the teams combined total. He is finding his way around the field and will be a force to reckon with as the season goes on. #11 Lavonte Parker is not the best QB but he believes in himself and so does the rest of the team, that is enough fuel to drive his intensity as he makes it happen. This team has the heart to win games if they can get the ball to #1 Tadd Martin and #12 Geno Jones or # 7 Kyle Grant some great things could happen…heres a coaching tip, practice makes perfect! Once this team get in synch, you better watch out.

Game 5 (5-1-0) GB Shipyard Wreckers 07                                   VS (5-1-0) Frecon Alliance 06

Who’s afraid of the big bad Red Machine? No one! Well maybe not anymore, it’s a reality that the lesser experienced teams seem to have an ingrained fear of playing the Frecon Alliance but after their loss to the GB Shipyard Wreckers that may be changing. It didn’t help that their leading rusher #1 Bernard Bowe got ejected and ultimately suspended. The Running game for the Alliance has always been a factor because it opens up their passing game but what will be the new game plan. They do have a decent runner in #22 Lavard Minnis but he doesn’t have the speed to get around the corner the way #1 does. Can Frecon still pass the ball? Sure they always pose a threat but with decent secondary coverage the QB touch will be put to the test. Their inability to really rack up huge points late in the season may result in another loss or two. So how does the GB Shipyard Wreckers get the win over Frecon? Call it a gift, with less than a minute in the game there is no reason to pass the ball, you take the knee and run as much time off the clock as possible, then punt the ball and pint them deep. Frecon passed and it resulted in a “pick 6” by #9 Julian Zephy, who also ran in the PAT to give them the lead and the game. Apart from that, the Wreckers still displayed a lackluster defense that doesn’t make the big stops that it needs to and an offence that never really got into synch. A brief rainfall washed away any chance of a running game. Can the wrecker survive a round 1 playoff…not if they continue in this same manner!

Game 6 (2-4-0) MLM Assassins 08                                         VS (3-2-1) Container Port Piranhas 12

What happens when you have perhaps the best new team coming off a 2 game winning streak and they take on a more experienced team that’s seemingly fixated on past accomplishments? You get the hottest game of the season! This was one of those games that you had to watch the only thing that would have made this any better would have been watching it in Sun Life Stadium. The MLM Assassins have proved that they can play this game, point blank! Everything in life requires balance, and this team has an equal amount of “run and pass”. #1 Shandera Gardiner will run the ball, #2 rejoine Cooper will pass the ball, #66 Delorese Rolle will make the catch,#6 Latonya Gardiner will get the “Pick6”, #15 Cristal Cooper will make the tackle and #28 Davinia Arbrister will make all the other tackles (they combine for 31 tackles on the season so far)! So how do they fall to the Container Port Piranhas. Some say it was a controversial call. I say, it is what it is! I learned as a child that when you play with puppies, they will lick your mouth! You have to be able to secure the game by ensuring the opposing team has no chance to win. Once that’s done, a “missed call” or a “no call’ will not matter. The Piranhas on the other hand, played like a team that needed to win…well maybe because they had to win. Led by the rushing game of #2 Kathrina Ellis and the soft hands of #7 Tremaine Simmons and #3 Sherma McDonald, they were able to move the ball fairly well but still struggled to make it to the end zone. This was by no means an easy game and some of the players could be seen to have taken the resolve that they were not going to win but somehow, someway they managed to complete a last minute pass that was ruled “Touchdown” to give them the win. If these two teams meet in the playoffs I think it safe to say that payback….well lets just leave it at that.
