THURSDAY?S FIRST ROUND CANCELLED AT PURE SILK-BAHAMAS CLASSIC DUE TO FLOODING

Thu, May 23rd 2013, 07:47 AM

Paradise Island, Bahamas – Due to the severe flood conditions brought on by 11 inches of rain on Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday evening, the inaugural Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic has been reduced to 54 holes and will begin play on Friday (May 24). Play is cancelled for Thursday and the golf course will continue to be closed to spectators until Friday.

The grouping and pairings released earlier for Thursday will remain for Friday’s opening round. Golfers will begin play at 7:25 a.m. off the 1st and 10th tees. The full field will play 36 holes before a cut is made to reduce the field heading into Sunday’s final round.

“The damage to the golf course and structures caused by Tuesday’s heavy rain and winds was extensive and we are working around the clock to repair damages and drain the golf course so that we can present a first-class event for the LPGA, Pure Silk and the people of the Bahamas,” said Matt Truax, tournament director for Global Golf Management. “We thank everyone for their understanding and patience while we do everything possible to return Ocean Club Golf Course to championship condition.”

The Pure Silk-Bahamas Classic will showcase one of the strongest fields of the year on the women’s Tour, with all 10 previous winners in 2013 entered and nine of the top 10 women’s golfers in the Rolex rankings competing.

It is the first time an LPGA event is being played in the Bahamas.
